RINDGE, N.H. (October 20, 2004) –
The Franklin Pierce field hockey team fell 3-0 to visiting, No. 8
nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University today in
Northeast-10 action. With the win, Southern Connecticut improves
its overall record to 13-5 and its league mark to 12-3, while
Franklin Pierce drops to 5-9 overall and 4-9 in conference

Though the match was dominated by the Owls in the first half, it
was Franklin Pierce who had the best scoring opportunity. With 8:50
remaining in the opening frame, junior Amy McMullin (Leawood,
Kan./Messalonskee) nearly gave the Ravens the lead, but her
chip shot clanged off the left post. At the completion of the first
half, Franklin Pierce had no shots or penalty corners, while
Southern Connecticut State had six shots and nine penalty
corners.
The scoreless tie was finally broken by junior Emma Rufleth
(Clinton, Conn./Morgan School) 2:27 into the second half, as she
took a feed from freshman Angela Cafarelli (Enfield, Conn./Enfield)
and blasted a shot past Ravens goalkeeper Brandi Guertin (Bellingham,
Mass./Bellingham) for her third goal of the season. Southern
Connecticut took a 2-0 lead 9:10 later when junior Cathy Cardini
(Willington, Conn./E.O. Smith) scored her sixth goal of the season
off a feed from sophomore Rachel Ragusa (Bethel, Conn./Bethel).
Sophomore Rebecca Kushwara (Thomaston, Conn./Wamogo) capped off a
three goal second half for the Owls 2:15 later, when she deflected
a Cori Krajewski (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) shot past Guertin for her
fourth goal of the year.
Earning the victory was junior goalkeeper Casey Sanford (North
Haven, Conn./North Haven). She saved two shots en route to her
sixth win of the season. Guertin took the loss despite saving
eleven shots.
