Greyhounds explode for four second half goals

WORCESTER, Mass. (October 14, 2004)
– The Franklin Pierce field hockey team fell 5-1 to host
Assumption College today in Northeast-10 action. With the win,
Assumption improves its overall record to 6-10 and its league mark
to 5-8, while Franklin Pierce drops to 4-8 overall and 3-8 in
conference play.
The Greyhounds jumped to an early 1-0 lead, when senior Lauren
Kursonis (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) scored on a feed from
senior Heather Miner (N. Attleboro, Mass./N. Attleboro) 11:12 into
the contest. Franklin Pierce fought back to knot the score at one
12:04 later, as sophomore Collette
Brady (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) capitalized on a
penalty corner to notch her second goal of the season. The teams
were deadlocked at the end of one half of play.
Assumption took control of the match in the second frame,
outshooting the Ravens eleven to three and exploding for four
unanswered goals. The duo of junior Kerry Kelly (Dedham,
Mass./Dedham) and Miner figured in on all four conversions,
totaling five points apiece for the game. Kelly netted two goals
(both assisted by Miner) and assisted on another, while Miner
tallied a goal of her own. The first of Kelly's two goals was
scored just 3:58 into the half, while the second found the cage
with 6:45 remaining in the game. In between Kelly's eighth
and ninth goals of the season, she assisted on junior Megan
Atkins' (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury) fourth tally of the year.
Miner capped off the four goal flurry with her second of the year,
giving Assumption, the 5-1 victory.
Senior goalkeeper Colleen Haughey (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla) saved
two shots en route to the victory for the Greyhounds while
sophomore Amanda Pietrazsuk
(Clinton, Conn./Morgan School) took the loss despite saving
seven shots.
Franklin Pierce (4-8, 3-8 NE-10) returns to action on Sunday when
they travel to American International College for a Northeast-10
Conference match beginning at 1 p.m. Assumption (6-10, 5-8 NE-10)
will play again on Saturday, as they travel to Saint
Michael's College for a league match at 1 p.m.
