– Freshman Angela Barone
(Norwood, Pa./Interboro) netted her first collegiate goal,
but Merrimack College managed to slip by Franklin Pierce, 2-1, as
Katie Walker (Farmington, Conn.) scored six and a half minutes into
overtime to give the Warriors the win.
The Ravens notched the first goal of the game 22 minutes and seven
seconds into the first half. Barone's goal was unassisted as
she deposited a loose ball in front of the Warriors goal into an
empty net. Kristen Belair (Methuen, Mass.) evened the score for
Merrimack with two seconds remaining in the half.
Tied with one goal apiece, the teams headed into overtime. Walker
netted the game winner with 6:30 gone in the extra period for the
win.
Franklin Pierce sophomore goalkeeper, Brandi Guertin (Bellingham,
Mass./Bellingham) made eight saves in net. Merrimack's Sara
Joyce (Hempstead, N.H.) stopped 14 shots and earned the win.
Franklin Pierce (0-1, 0-1 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday when
it hosts Assumption College in its home opener at 1 p.m. Merrimack
(1-0, 1-0 NE-10) next travels to Worcester, Mass. on Monday for a
non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
