Weagle forced to go the distance, Coughlin's three hits leads
offense
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 23, 2003)
- Franklin Pierce, ranked fourth in this week's New England
Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division II poll,
scored six runs in the eighth and ninth innings to rally from an
early 2-0 deficit and topped American International College, 7-2,
in Northeast-10 Conference Markey Division baseball action at AIC
Park this afternoon.
Franklin Pierce Head
CoachJayson King was forced to scrap his
pregame plan of limiting junior right-hander Matt
Weagle (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) to four or
five innings in today's game as American International took a 2-0
lead after two innings of play. Weagle settled down and improved to
5-1 after the rough start throwing seven two-hit scoreless innings
to allow the Ravens to make the comeback. He surrendered two earned
runs, just one earned, on six hits total with six strikeouts and a
walk in the nine-inning effort.
Senior Josh Coughlin
(Keene, N.H./Keene) led the Ravens offense as he hit
3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Junior Dante
Blancarte (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) finished 2-5
with a pair of doubles and runs scored. Senior Mike
Callahan (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) hit 2-4
with two doubles, a run scored and RBI, while sophomore
Eric Cavers (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford
Hills) was 2-5 with a triple. Freshman
Nick Panza (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central)
chipped in two RBI.
Freshman shortstop Drew Kohl was
the lone AIC batter with multiple hits as he finished 2-3.
Sophomore Jeff Davenport lined a triple and scored a run.
Sophomore Paul Thompson suffered
the loss (0-3) as he was touched for three earned runs on two hits
with three walks in two-thirds of an inning of relief. Freshman
Michael Mish pitched seven-plus strong innings, allowing two runs,
just one earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
AIC scored single runs off Weagle
in the first and second innings. Sophomore Scott Houghton scored an
unearned run on a wild pitch in the first, while Davenport tripled
to leadoff the second before scoring on a passed ball.
Franklin Pierce got one run back in
the fifth when Coughlin singled and later scored when freshman
Elliott Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant)
reached on a fielder's choice.
The Ravens took the lead for good
with five runs in the eighth. Blancarte doubled with one out to
chase Mish before Thompson came on and walked the next three
batters to load the bases and walk in a run. Coughlin registered an
RBI single, followed by Panza, who lined a two-run base hit.
Franklin Pierce (16-9, 9-5 NE-10)
returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Assumption
College for a key NE-10 Markey Division battle at 3:30 p.m. AIC
(3-22, 2-12 NE-10) visits No. 30-ranked UMass Lowell tomorrow
