Franklin Pierce Slips Past Assumption, 2-1

White strong on the mound, Ravens score unearned run in ninth for win

RINDGE, N.H. (April 24, 2003) - Franklin Pierce, ranked fourth in this week's New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division II poll, scored an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth to post 2-1 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference Markey Division baseball action at Crystal Field this afternoon.

Assumption's only two errors of the game put the winning run on base and then allowed it to score in the bottom of the ninth. Franklin Pierce sophomore Eric Cavers (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) reached base with one out when Assumption third baseman Steve Muscatello failed to corral a groundball. After senior Paul McAuliffe (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) walked, the Greyhounds called on senior Tom Griffin) to face Ravens junior Dante Blancarte (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury). Griffin got the ground ball he needed, but it was a little slow to second base and 'Hounds shortstop Andy Barlow still tried to turn the inning-ending double play, but his throw sailed over the first baseman's head, allowing Cavers to trot home with the winning run.

Franklin Pierce senior Jon White (Medford, Mass./Medford) turned in another solid outing on the mound to improve to 4-2. He allowed just one earned run, scattering five hits with ten strikeouts and no walks in the complete game effort.

Cavers sparked the Ravens offense, scoring both runs and adding a single and two stolen bases. The two steals give him 15 for the season (16 attempts), matching his own program single-season record set last year as a freshman. His 30 career thefts are just two shy of the career record held by former teammate Scott Loiseau (1999-2002).

Senior Josh Coughlin (Keene, N.H./Keene) and freshman Elliott Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) each chipped in with two hits, with Shea adding a pair of stolen bases. Franklin Pierce left 11 runners on base for the afternoon, including the bases loaded on two occasions.

No Assumption batters registered multiple hits for the game. Junior Ryan Cody finished 1-3 with a run scored, while Barlow was 1-4 with an RBI double.

Griffin (0-5) was pinned with the loss, while junior Nick Foundas turned in 2.1 innings of no-hit relief, yielding just the one unearned run with two walks and two strikeouts. Freshman Matt Anderson went the first six-plus innings and allowed one earned run, scattering eight hits and five walks with three strikeouts.

Franklin Pierce squandered an opportunity to jump ahead in the first, failing to push a run across with runners on second and third and one out. The Ravens scratched ahead in the fifth as Cavers singled down the rightfield line and later scored on a wild pitch, but got no more, leaving the bases loaded.

Assumption tied the contest with a two-out rally in the eighth. White struck the first two batters of the inning out, then Cody singled to center before Barlow laced a double to right center to drive him in.

Franklin Pierce (17-9, 10-5 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Bryant College to start a key three-game Markey Division series over the weekend. Assumption (13-14, 7-8 NE-10) hosts Southern Connecticut State University in another key divisional matchup with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
