Blancarte hits for the cycle to spark offense, Basile turns in
strong relief outing
MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 21,
2003) - Franklin Pierce, ranked fourth in this week's New
England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division II
poll, got revenge for last week's 8-6 loss to instate rival
Southern New Hampshire University with a commanding 13-3 victory
over the Penmen this afternoon.
Junior designated hitter
Dante Blancarte (Amesbury,
Mass./Amesbury) hit for the cycle as he finished
4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI to lead Franklin Pierce
to its third-straight victory. Blancarte tripled in the first,
smacked a three-run home run in the second, singled in the fifth
and doubled in his last at-bat in the eighth.
Junior right-hander
Greg Basile (Suffield, Conn./Suffield)
picked up the win (1-0) as he fired 5.1 innings of shutout relief
of starterBryan Borowski (Clarksburg,
Mass./Drury), who walked the bases loaded to start
the game. Basile, who pitched a career-high innings in a game,
scattered three hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
Also aiding in the Ravens 13-hit
attack was senior Paul McAuliffe (Foxboro,
Mass./Foxboro), who finished 2-5 with a double and
three runs scored. Freshman Nick Panza (Albany,
N.Y./Colonie Central) was 2-3 with a run scored and
two RBI and senior Josh Coughlin (Keene,
N.H./Keene) hit 2-4 with an RBI. Senior
Dan Close (Leominster, Mass./Leominster)
chipped in with a home run, three runs scored and three RBI.
Sophomore Mike Bernard led Southern
New Hampshire with two of its five hits on the afternoon. Senior
Eric Harvey suffered the loss as he was touched for nine runs,
seven earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks in
4.2 innings of work.
Franklin Pierce opened the scoring
in the first as McAuliffe reached on an error and scored on
Blancarte's triple. Close followed with his first home run of the
season to center field.
SNHU got one back in the bottom of
the frame when sophomore Ray Powers laced an RBI single, but the
Penmen left the bases full as Basile worked out of Borowski's jam.
Blancarte belted a two-out
three-run homer to right in the second and the Ravens took a 9-1
lead in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single from Panza.
Franklin Pierce plated three unearned runs in the sixth to stake
out a 12-1 cushion and never looked back.
Franklin Pierce (15-9, 8-5 NE-10)
returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it travels to Waltham,
Mass., to for a doubleheader at Bentley College beginning at 1 p.m.
SNHU (8-19, 5-12 NE-10) visits Merrimack College for a twinbill
tomorrow.
