Borowski pitches Ravens to win and
offense rebounds from yesterday's loss
RINDGE, N.H. (April 16,
2003) - Franklin Pierce, ranked second in this week's New
England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division II
poll, rode a strong pitching performance before breaking the game
open late for a 6-1 victory over American International College in
a Northeast-10 Conference Markey Division baseball matchup at
Crystal Field this afternoon.
Sophomore right-hander
Bryan Borowski (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury)
improved to 3-0 this spring as he allowed just one earned run,
scattering seven hits and two walks, with nine strikeouts in eight
innings of work. He settled down after a rough first inning to
throw seven scoreless. Junior Greg Basile (Suffield,
Conn./Suffield) closed the game out with a perfect
ninth, striking out one.
Senior Mike Callahan
(Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) helped pace the
offense as he hit 2-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman Shawn
Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy Name) was 2-4 with a pair
of runs scored, while sophomore Eric Cavers (Otisfield,
Maine/Oxford Hills) finished 2-5 with a double and
RBI.
Sophomore Jeremy LaVertu led
American International as he hit 2-3 with a run scored, while
classmate Eric Boissey was 2-4. Junior Jeff Bourque finished 1-4,
driving in the Yellow Jackets lone run.
Senior Paul DeMaria suffered the
loss (0-2) in a hardworking complete game effort. He yielded six
runs, just four earned, on ten hits with eight strikeouts and two
walks over eight innings.
AIC jumped ahead with a single run
in the first as LaVertu led off the game with a single to right
center. Bourque singled LaVertu in two batters later with a single
to right, but ran the Yellow Jackets out of the inning attempting
to stretch it into a double.
Franklin Pierce scored a pair of
runs in the second to go ahead for good. Senior Dan
Close (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) led off the
frame with a double down the leftfield line and later scored on a
sacrifice fly by freshman Elliott Shea (Jaffrey,
N.H./Conant). Hayes, who followed Close with a single
through the right side, scored on a single from junior
Jason Bourque (Randolph, Mass./Kingswood Regional
(N.H.)).
The Ravens added a single run in
the fifth as senior Paul McAuliffe (Foxboro,
Mass./Foxboro) led off the inning with a single down
the rightfield line and later scored when the AIC third baseman
botched a throw down to third on a double-steal attempt.
Franklin Pierce busted the game
open with three runs in the eighth. Hayes opened the inning with a
single and scored on a single from Callahan, which also scored
senior Josh Coughlin (Keene, N.H./Keene)
when Boissey misplayed a throw to the plate. Cavers then singled up
the middle to drive in Callahan with the final run of the game.
Franklin Pierce (12-7, 5-3 NE-10)
returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it travels to Manchester
for a game against Southern New Hampshire University at 3:30 p.m.
AIC (2-18, 1-8 NE-10) hosts Bentley College tomorrow at 3:30
p.m.
