check
MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 17,
2003) - Southern New Hampshire University scored five runs
in the sixth to break open a 3-3 tie and held on for an 8-6 victory
over Franklin Pierce, ranked second in this week's New England
Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division II poll, in
Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at Penmen Field this
afternoon.
Southern New Hampshire junior
right-hander Jason Paul settled down after a first inning, in which
he allowed two runs, and yielded just one over the next seven
frames. Paul earned the complete game victory as he allowed six
runs, just three earned, scattering seven hits and strucking out
ten despite walking seven batters.

and an RBI. The top third of the Penmen lineup was a combined 7-14
at the plate with five runs scored and five RBI.
While the top half of the Franklin
Pierce lineup was a combined 6-16 for the afternoon, the bottom
half registered just one hit in 17 at bats. Junior

Mass./Amesbury) was 2-3 with a double, two RBI and a
run scored, while senior Dan Close (Leominster,
Mass./Leominster) was 2-5 with two RBI. Senior

bunt single. For the Penmen, freshman Wayne Parker lined a two-run
single with the bases loaded and two out.
SNHU took its first lead of the
game in the third when Ingraham singled home Bernard who had led
off the frame with a triple. McAuliffe knotted the score at 3-3 in
the fifth with leadoff homer for the Ravens.
The Penmen erupted with five runs
in the sixth as Caudle registered an RBI single after Hart singled
to load the bases and chase Brouillard. Bernard then followed with
a grand slam off Ravens reliever Jon White (Medford,
Mass./Arlington Catholic).
Franklin Pierce made things
interesting with three runs in the ninth. Junior Clint
Daggan (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) struck out, then
reached first on an error by the catcher. After Paul walked
Steve Stanley (Northfield,
Mass./Pioneer), he retired the next two batters with
pop ups, then Blancarte drilled a base-clearing double. Close
followed with a single to score Blancarte, but Paul got the next
batter looking to end the game.
