Assumption Stymies Franklin Pierce, 10-3

Phillips handcuffs Ravens offense for eight innings

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 15, 2003) - Assumption College, ranked sixth in this week's New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division II poll pounded out 13 hits in posting a 10-3 victory over second-ranked Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 Conference Markey Division baseball matchup at H.L. Rocheleau Field this afternoon.

Assumption right-hander Corey Phillips kept the Franklin Pierce offense at bay as he struck out 14 over 8.1 innings of work, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with three walks.

Senior Bill Bertrand led the Greyhounds 13-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and runs scored and a stolen base. Freshman Matt Cavallaro hit 2-5 with two RBI, while junior John Ethier was 1-3 with a double and two RBI.

Franklin Pierce freshman right-hander Tyler Cummings (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) was touched for four runs (three earned) in the first inning before settling down and matching Phillips until he was chased in the sixth inning. Cummings (2-3) suffered the loss as he yielded seven runs total, six earned, on seven hits with a season-high matching 11 strikeouts and three walks in 5.1 innings of work. After getting out of the first inning, aside from a pair of walks in the second frame, he was perfect over the next four, striking out nine of 11 batters during one stretch.

Freshman Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy Name) was the lone Ravens batter with multiple hits as he finished 2-2 with a double and run scored. Junior Dante Blancarte (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) and sophomore Eric Cavers (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) each chipped in with RBI singles.

Assumption got all the runs it would need in the first inning as the first three batters singled before Cummings could register an out. Bertrand and Cavallaro each recorded RBI singles, while Ethier drove in a run on a fielder's choice, with the fourth run scoring on the play when the attempted double-play throw sailed over the first baseman's head.

The Ravens got a run back in the third when freshman Nick Panza (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) led off with a double and later scored on a single up the middle from Blancarte.

The Greyhounds chased Cummings in the sixth. After he struck out the leadoff batter, Cummings yielded three-straight hits, including an RBI double from Ethier as the 'Hounds plated three more runs in the frame to break the game open.

Franklin Pierce had its best chance for a big inning off Phillips in the seventh as Hayes and freshmanElliott Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) led off with hits. Cavers singled in Hayes with one out, but then Phillips forced McAuliffe into an inning-ending double play to squelch the rally.

After Assumption scored three combined runs over the seventh and eighth innings to build a 10-2 advantage, Franklin Pierce loaded the bases with one out in the ninth to chase Phillips after he forced in a run on a bases-loaded walk. However, the rally was halted with another inning-ending double play.

Franklin Pierce (11-7, 4-3 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it hosts American International College in its first home game of the season at 3:30 p.m. Assumption (11-8, 5-4 NE-10) visits Saint Anselm College tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
