Franklin Pierce Splits Tight Doubleheader at Saint Rose

Golden Knights rally for game one victory; Weagle out-duels Jette in nightcap

ALBANY, N.Y. (April 13, 2003) - Franklin Pierce, ranked first in this week's NCAA Division II Northeast Regional rankings, split a doubleheader with College of Saint Rose in key Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at Bleecker Stadium this afternoon. Saint Rose rallied for a 3-2 win in game one, before Franklin Pierce posted a 2-1 comeback win in the nightcap.

In game one, Saint Rose rallied from a run behind on two occasions in the late innings with single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth. Sophomore Jean-Francois DuFour sparked the Golden Knights offense by hitting 2-for-4 with a home run, while senior Erik Hoover was 3-3. Classmate Bob Timke finished 2-4 with a run scored.

Junior Justin King earned the win (3-0) with an inning with no-hit relief, striking out one. Classmate Jason Rodriguez pinned down his second save of the season with a no-hit ninth. Sophomore Leon Kruset pitched the first seven innings, allowing two runs, just one earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

Senior Paul McAuliffe (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) led the Franklin Pierce offense by hitting 2-5 with a double. Freshman Elliott Shea (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) finished 2-3 with an RBI.

Freshman Tyler Cummings (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) was pinned with the loss (2-2), allowing an unearned run despite not allowing a hit with a walk and a strikeout in the eighth. Senior Jon White (Medford, Mass./Arlington Catholic) pitched seven innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and a walk.

The game was scoreless until Franklin Pierce broke through with a run in the fourth. Shea registered an RBI single to center that scored senior Josh Coughlin (Keene, N.H./Keene) who had walked.

Saint Rose knotted the score in the sixth thanks to DuFour's fourth home run of the season to left field. Franklin Pierce forged back ahead in the seventh as junior Dante Blancarte (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) singled in sophomore Eric Cavers (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills).

The Golden Knights knotted the score again in the bottom half of the inning when Timke scored on a fielder's choice, then took the lead in the eighth when sophomore Paul Greco scored when Timke reached on an error.

Shea drew a lead-off walk in the ninth for the Ravens, but was left stranded at second after being advanced with a sacrifice bunt.

In the nightcap, Franklin Pierce junior right-hander Matt Weagle (Charlton, Mass./Shephard Hill) out-dueled Saint Rose senior Kevin Jette (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) for the victory.

Weagle allowed just one earned run on three hits with nine strikeouts and no walks in the complete game victory to improve to 4-0 this spring. The win marked Weagle's eighth-straight winning decision dating back to last season, setting a new program record.

McAuliffe paced the offense again, hitting 2-4 with a home run, while Cavers was 1-3 with an RBI. Shea and fellow freshman Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass./Holy Name) also chipped in hits for the Ravens.

Jette was pinned with the loss (1-1) as he yielded two earned runs on six hits with ten strikeouts and three walks in going the distance. Timke provided the Saint Rose offense, hitting 1-2 with a solo home run in the fourth that gave the Golden Knights the early lead.

After the Timke homer, Franklin Pierce answered in the bottom of the fifth, as Cavers singled up the middle to score freshman Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry), who led off the frame with a walk.

The Ravens took the lead for good in the eighth when McAuliffe belted his second home run of the season and the team's first of the spring with the Conference-mandated wood bats to left field.

Weagle set the side down in order in the ninth with a pair of groundouts and a fly ball to right to nail down the win in the ninth.

Franklin Pierce (11-6, 4-2 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Worcester, Mass., to face Assumption College at 3:30 p.m. Saint Rose (14-6, 4-2 NE-10) hosts Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m.
