RINDGE, N.H. (September 2,
2002) - Franklin Pierce College, ranked No. 4 in the
National Soccer Coach Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas
Division II Preseason Coaches poll, posted a 4-0 victory over
University of Massachusetts Lowell in Northeast-10 Conference
women's soccer action at Crystal Field this afternoon.
Senior All-American
Angela Verdoes (Katwijk Aan Zee, Holland)
netted two goals and sophomore Meghan Welcome
(Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) added a goal and an
assist to lead Franklin Pierce.
UMass Lowell recorded the first two
shots of the match in the opening minutes, but the Ravens first
three shots of the match resulted in three quick goals in a
three-minute span.
Verdoes scored the first Franklin
Pierce goal off a feed from Welcome at the 15:53 mark. Welcome
netted her marker just 2:04 later after a River Hawks defensive
turnover. Another defensive turnover resulted in the third Franklin
Pierce goal by Verdoes at the 18:15 mark.
Senior Anumari Ylesmaki
(Vantaa, Finland) netted the final marker of the
match as she rebounded her own penalty kick attempt in the 52nd
minute of play.
Junior Aase Kibsgaard
(Korgen, Norway) registered one save in claiming her
second shutout of the season.
UMass Lowell's best scoring bid
came with under ten minutes to play, but a shot from just inside
the penalty box by senior Amy Morin was cleared at the line by
Ravens defender Alison Considine (Needham,
Mass./Needham).
River Hawks sophomore Nikki Downs
registered seven saves in net.
Franklin Pierce (2-0, 2-0 NE-10)
returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Saint Anselm College
at 4 p.m. UMass Lowell (0-1, 0-1 NE-10) travels to American
International College on Thursday for a match at 3:30 p.m.
