NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September
11, 2002) - Franklin Pierce College, ranked No. 4 in this
week's National Soccer Coach Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas
Division II poll, used four second-half markers to breeze to a 4-0
victory over No. 22 Southern Connecticut State University in
Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at a windy Jess Dow
Field tonight.
Franklin Pierce has now posted
three-straight shutouts to start the season - just two shy of the
program record of five at the start of the 2000 campaign. Junior
goalkeeper Aase Kibsgaard (Korgen,
Norway) registered two saves to preserve the third
shutout of her Franklin Pierce career. The transfer from Champlain
College has yet to yield a goal in her first 255 minutes in net for
the Ravens.
Senior All-American
Angela Verdoes (Katwijk Aan Zee, Holland)
netted a pair of second half goals to lead Franklin Pierce. Her
first marker came at the 53:59-mark, just 1:40 after sophomore
Meghan Welcome (Haverhill,
Mass./Haverhill) opened the scoring with a tally,
assisted by senior Andrea Caesar (Visby,
Sweden), in the 53rd minute.
Senior Anumari Ylesmaki
(Vantaa, Finland) extended the Ravens lead to 3-0
with a goal, assisted by sophomore Laura King
(Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) in the 74th
minute.
Verdoes capped the scoring at the
76:29-mark as she bent a corner kick from the left side into the
top-right shelf of the goal.
Franklin Pierce out-shot the Owls
by a 21-5 margin. Southern junior Jean-Marie Monroe recorded a
career-high nine saves in goal.
Franklin Pierce (3-0, 3-0 NE-10)
returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Saint Michael's College
at 1 p.m. Southern Connecticut (3-1, 3-1 NE-10) travels to
Merrimack College on Sunday for a match at 1 p.m.
