#4 Franklin Pierce Shuts Out Saint Michael's, 3-0

RINDGE, N.H. (September 14, 2002) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 4 in this week's National Soccer Coach Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, remains unscored upon this season after claiming a 3-0 victory over Saint Michael's College, ranked fifth in New England, in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Crystal Field this afternoon.

Franklin Pierce has posted four-straight shutouts to start the season and is now just one shy of the program record of five set at the outset of the 2000 campaign. Junior goalkeeper Aase Kibsgaard (Korgen, Norway) registered two saves to claim her fourth shutout in as many appearances. The Champlain College transfer has yet to yield a goal in her first 335 minutes of action at Franklin Pierce.

Sophomore forward Meghan Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) sparked the offense with a pair of second half goals to break the match open. Her first marker came at the 56-minute mark, assisted by senior Andrea Caesar (Visby, Sweden), as she took a through ball in the penalty area, beating Saint Michael's goalkeeper Abigail Lemanski to the ball, before scoring with a shot that deflected off one SMC defender before finding the back of the net.

Welcome added an unassisted tally in the 68th minute as she took the ball in the left corner, beat one defender, then slid a low shot past Lemanski and into the lower right corner.

Caesar put the Ravens on the board at the 23:43-mark by scoring the game winner on a direct kick from 20-yards out that found the upper left corner.

Saint Michael's best scoring opportunity came with 32 minutes remaining in the second half, but a close-range shot by junior Sara Pope was cleared away by Franklin Pierce junior Alison Considine (Needham, Mass./Needham) after Kibsgaard misplayed the ball. Lemanski recorded nine saves on the afternoon in goal for Saint Michael's.

Franklin Pierce (4-0, 4-0 NE-10) begins a three-game road trip on Wednesday at the University of New Haven at 4 p.m.
