Seven Ravens errors lead to eight unearned runs and UML
laces 18 hits
RINDGE, N.H. (April 8, 2002) - The University
of Massachusetts Lowell took advantage of seven Franklin Pierce
errors and banged out 18 hits to cruise to a 16-3 victory in
Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at Crystal Field this
afternoon.
UMass Lowell staked out a 10-0 lead after two and a half innings
and freshman lefthander Brad Laurin kept the Franklin Pierce
offense at bay to earn his second victory of the season. He allowed
three earned runs, scattering six hits with five strikeouts and two
walks over eight innings.
The River Hawks jumped out a 5-0 lead in the top of the first
inning as three FP
errors led to four unearned runs against starter Scott
Loiseau (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian).
Sophomore Todd Cole rapped an RBI double and senior Dave Williamson
lined an RBI triple down the right field line.
UML tacked on three more in the second with Brian Eck capping
the frame with a two-run single before being thrown out attempting
to stretch the hit into a double.
A two-run homer by junior Scott Lavalley capped the 10-0 start
for the River Hawks in the third inning.
Junior Allen Mottram led the UMass Lowell offense as he hit
three-for-six with a double, a homerun, two runs scored and four
RBIs. Williamson finished 3-5 with a triple, a homer and two RBIs,
while junior Matt Tupman was 2-4 with a triple and an RBI.
Franklin Pierce got all its offense by way of the homerun as
Loiseau, classmate Eric Burney (Rockville,
Conn./Rockville) and junior Dan Close
(Leominster, Mass./Leominster) all smacked solo
shots. Juniors Chris Shank (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont
Regional) and Al Medeiros (New Bedford,
Mass./New Bedford) both added doubles.
Loiseau suffered the loss as he was touched for ten runs, just
five earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts and a walk in three
innings of work. Freshman Gary Laakso (Athol,
Mass./Athol) followed him with five solid innings of
relief work, allowing three runs, just two earned, on seven hits
with three strikeouts and two walks.
