UMass Lowell Boots Franklin Pierce, 16-3

Seven Ravens errors lead to eight unearned runs and UML laces 18 hits

RINDGE, N.H. (April 8, 2002) - The University of Massachusetts Lowell took advantage of seven Franklin Pierce errors and banged out 18 hits to cruise to a 16-3 victory in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at Crystal Field this afternoon.

UMass Lowell staked out a 10-0 lead after two and a half innings and freshman lefthander Brad Laurin kept the Franklin Pierce offense at bay to earn his second victory of the season. He allowed three earned runs, scattering six hits with five strikeouts and two walks over eight innings.

The River Hawks jumped out a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning as three FP
errors led to four unearned runs against starter Scott Loiseau (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian). Sophomore Todd Cole rapped an RBI double and senior Dave Williamson lined an RBI triple down the right field line.

UML tacked on three more in the second with Brian Eck capping the frame with a two-run single before being thrown out attempting to stretch the hit into a double.

A two-run homer by junior Scott Lavalley capped the 10-0 start for the River Hawks in the third inning.

Junior Allen Mottram led the UMass Lowell offense as he hit three-for-six with a double, a homerun, two runs scored and four RBIs. Williamson finished 3-5 with a triple, a homer and two RBIs, while junior Matt Tupman was 2-4 with a triple and an RBI.

Franklin Pierce got all its offense by way of the homerun as Loiseau, classmate Eric Burney (Rockville, Conn./Rockville) and junior Dan Close (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) all smacked solo shots. Juniors Chris Shank (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional) and Al Medeiros (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) both added doubles.

Loiseau suffered the loss as he was touched for ten runs, just five earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts and a walk in three innings of work. Freshman Gary Laakso (Athol, Mass./Athol) followed him with five solid innings of relief work, allowing three runs, just two earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Franklin Pierce (11-9, 6-3 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it travels to Manchester, N.H., to face Saint Anselm College at 3:30 p.m. UMass Lowell (10-8, 6-4 NE-10) hosts Bryant College tomorrow.
