Two Ravens Claim NE-10 Baseball Honors

Shank earns third Pitcher of the Week honor this season, second-straight Dunn named Freshman of the Week for second time

RINDGE, N.H. (April 9, 2002) - The Franklin Pierce baseball team was recognized by the Northeast-10 Conference again this week as two members earned weekly honors by the Conference office this afternoon.

Junior right-hander Chris Shank (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional) was tabbed the Northeast-10's Pitcher of the Week for the second-straight week and third time this season. Shank was masterful in FPC's 7-4 victory over in-state rival Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday afternoon. Shank made a run at former teammate Justin Blood's Conference and school-record 20 strikeouts in game set against the Penmen nearly a year ago to the day on April 11, 2001. Shank fanned a career-high 17 SNHU batters as he earned his fourth win of the season, allowing four runs, just two earned, on five hits with just one walk (which came in the eighth inning). He struck out the side five times and sat down seven-straight batters in a row by way of the K during one stretch.

Shank also batted .308 (4-13) with a homerun and four RBIs last week for Franklin Pierce. He belted a three-run homer at Saint Anselm on Friday afternoon.

Shank leads the Ravens pitching staff with a 4-1 record, a 2.19 earned run average with 58 strikeouts in 37 innings pitched (14.11 K's/9 IP). Opposing hitters are batting a mere .136 against him and he is allowing just 0.70 walks and hits per innings pitched (WHIP). Shank leads the Northeast-10 in opposing batting average (74 points lower than second place) and strikeouts, while he ranks second in wins and third in ERA.

Freshman third baseman Bear Dunn (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) was named the NE-10 Freshman of the Week for the second time this spring. He led the Ravens offense in a 5-1 week with a .435 batting average (10-23), six runs scored, two doubles, a triple, four stolen bases (on as many attempts) and five RBIs. Dunn posted a .609 slugging percentage and .500 on-base percentage for the week.

Dunn led off the week with a two-for-three effort with a stolen base and two runs score to help lead Franklin Pierce to a 9-6 victory over Teikyo Post University. In a doubleheader sweep of Merrimack College on Saturday, he was a combined 4-8 with a triple and three RBIs. Dunn also batted 2-4 with a run scored and two key RBIs in Sunday's game one win against Southern New Hampshire.

Dunn currently leads the Ravens with a .368 batting average (25-68), 17 runs scored, five doubles, three triples and 14 RBIs. He boasts a .529 slugging percentage and .463 on-base percentage while starting all 20 games at third base. Dunn ranks third in the NE-10 in triples and ninth in on-base percentage.

Franklin Pierce (11-9, 6-3 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday, when it travels to Manchester, N.H., to face Saint Anselm College at 3:30 p.m. The Ravens next home game is Wednesday against Keene State College at 3:30 p.m.
