Shank earns third Pitcher of the
Week honor this season, second-straight Dunn named Freshman of the
Week for second time
RINDGE, N.H. (April 9,
2002) - The Franklin Pierce baseball team was recognized
by the Northeast-10 Conference again this week as two members
earned weekly honors by the Conference office this afternoon.
Junior right-hander
Chris Shank (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont
Regional) was tabbed the Northeast-10's Pitcher of
the Week for the second-straight week and third time this season.
Shank was masterful in FPC's 7-4 victory over in-state rival
Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday afternoon. Shank made a
run at former teammate Justin Blood's Conference and school-record
20 strikeouts in game set against the Penmen nearly a year ago to
the day on April 11, 2001. Shank fanned a career-high 17 SNHU
batters as he earned his fourth win of the season, allowing four
runs, just two earned, on five hits with just one walk (which came
in the eighth inning). He struck out the side five times and sat
down seven-straight batters in a row by way of the K during one
stretch.
Shank also batted .308 (4-13) with
a homerun and four RBIs last week for Franklin Pierce. He belted a
three-run homer at Saint Anselm on Friday afternoon.
Shank leads the Ravens pitching
staff with a 4-1 record, a 2.19 earned run average with 58
strikeouts in 37 innings pitched (14.11 K's/9 IP). Opposing hitters
are batting a mere .136 against him and he is allowing just 0.70
walks and hits per innings pitched (WHIP). Shank leads the
Northeast-10 in opposing batting average (74 points lower than
second place) and strikeouts, while he ranks second in wins and
third in ERA.
Freshman third baseman
Bear Dunn (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill)
was named the NE-10 Freshman of the Week for the second time this
spring. He led the Ravens offense in a 5-1 week with a .435 batting
average (10-23), six runs scored, two doubles, a triple, four
stolen bases (on as many attempts) and five RBIs. Dunn posted a
.609 slugging percentage and .500 on-base percentage for the week.
Dunn led off the week with a
two-for-three effort with a stolen base and two runs score to help
lead Franklin Pierce to a 9-6 victory over Teikyo Post University.
In a doubleheader sweep of Merrimack College on Saturday, he was a
combined 4-8 with a triple and three RBIs. Dunn also batted 2-4
with a run scored and two key RBIs in Sunday's game one win against
Southern New Hampshire.
Dunn currently leads the Ravens
with a .368 batting average (25-68), 17 runs scored, five doubles,
three triples and 14 RBIs. He boasts a .529 slugging percentage and
.463 on-base percentage while starting all 20 games at third base.
Dunn ranks third in the NE-10 in triples and ninth in on-base
percentage.
Franklin Pierce (11-9, 6-3 NE-10)
returns to action on Tuesday, when it travels to Manchester, N.H.,
to face Saint Anselm College at 3:30 p.m. The Ravens next home game
is Wednesday against Keene State College at 3:30 p.m.
