FLUSHING, N.Y. 9/28/25 - The Men and Women's Tennis Teams competed in the 2025 Intercollegiate Tennis Association DII Men's and Women's East Regional Championship this past weekend. Ainhoa Ordonez (Barcelona, Spain) and Gabriela Yamate (Sao Paulo, Brazil) both fought their way to the semifinals, putting up the strongest showing from the Ravens.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both the men's and women's tennis teams competed in singles and doubles at the 2025 ITA DII East Regional Championship.
On the men's side, Orlando Guerrero (Pachuco, Mexico), Daniel Garcia (Almeria, Spain), Martin Dominguez (Vigo, Spain), and Roman Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) all advanced past the round of 62 but were eliminated in the round of 32. Sophomore Ruben Minguez (Barcelona, Spain) delivered the strongest singles performance, reaching the round of 16 before falling to the tournament's second-seeded player.
In doubles, the teams of Guerrero and Garcia, Gonzalez and Mathias Bonnefond (Chateauroux, France), and Minguez and Dominguez each progressed beyond the round of 32 but were defeated in their next matches, ending the Ravens' doubles competition earlier than hoped.
For the women, Sara Gonzalez (Bogota, Columbia) and Ines Gabarro (Barcelona, Spain) entered the tournament seeded #7 and #8 respectively, earning byes in the first round. Both players reached tiebreakers in their opening matches but were ultimately eliminated early in the championship. Gabriela Yamate (Sao Paulo, Brazil) also received a first-round bye and advanced to the round of 32 before losing to the #4 seed.
The standout performance for the Ravens came in doubles, with the pairing of Yamate and Ainhoa Ordonez (Barcelona, Spain). After a bye in the round of 64, they defeated Bentley's team to advance to the round of 16. They then upset the 4th seeded doubles team with an 8-6 victory, earning a spot in the quarterfinals—the deepest run for any Raven in the tournament.
Yamate and Ordonez continued their impressive play in the quarterfinals, securing a place in the semifinals. Their remarkable run came to an end there, but not without leaving a strong mark on the 2025 ITA DII East Regional Championship
UP NEXT FOR THE RAVENS: The Men's and Women's tennis teams will compete against Bentley in a conference match at Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, October 4th.
