HOW IT HAPPENED

The Ravens found themselves under pressure early in the first period. The Garnet Chargers began by winning the opening faceoff and peppered the net with shots.

Union outshot Franklin Pierce, 9-3, in the period, but the Ravens kept it a scoreless game. Senior goaltender Jill Hertl (Highland Park, Ill.) looked calm and comfortable in the net and made timely saves.

The Ravens offensively had few chances, but they did have an opportunity on the power play over halfway through the period. They could not convert on the player-advantage, however, leaving the score knotted at 0-0 after the first twenty minutes.

The Garnet Chargers broke the ice in the second period on their own power-play opportunity. Union forward Maddie Leaney snuck one past Hertl to put the Garnet Chargers ahead, 1-0, entering the third period.

The Ravens made it competitive in the third period, but the Garnet Chargers broke through again. Union forward Reanna Loberg took advantage of a missed Franklin Pierce shot and buried a shot in the back of the net to make it 2-0.

The Ravens would attempt a comeback late in the game with an extra skater; however, the Garnet Chargers sealed the win with an empty netter. Union defender Quinn Dunkle put the puck in the net to give Union a 3-0 win.

The Ravens did get some quality chances offensively despite the score. Sophomore forward Caleigh Murphy (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) got five shots on the night, and defender Maggie Korneta (Naperville, Ill.) had four shots on goal.

The Ravens' efforts were not enough to stick with the Garnet Chargers, but they will have a chance at revenge on Saturday. Game two of the two-game series between Franklin Pierce and Union will be Saturday, September 27, at 3:00 p.m. at M&T Bank Center.
