RINDGE, N.H. (5/29/25)– Franklin Pierce University has announced the hiring of Liam Murphy as the new head coach of the men's and women's cross country and track & field programs. Murphy joins the Ravens after serving as the head coach for men's and women's cross country at American International College (AIC).
"We're thrilled to welcome Liam to the Franklin Pierce community," said Matt Johnson, Director of Athletics. "He brings a dynamic energy, a strong coaching foundation, and a clear vision for the future of our cross country and track & field programs. His experience as a recruiter, mentor, and educator make him an ideal leader for our student-athletes."
Murphy spent the 2024-25 academic year at AIC, where he coached cross country and distance athletes while overseeing practice design, travel logistics, meet management, and recruiting. During his time with the Yellow Jackets, he was instrumental in elevating the program's recruiting pipeline and training structure, while also contributing to the academic and athletic development of the student-athletes.
Prior to AIC, Murphy spent two years as a graduate assistant at Springfield College, where he worked closely with both the men's and women's cross country teams and the distance squads during track season. His efforts helped guide Kate Bonanno to USTFCCCA All-Mideast Region honors in 2022—the first such honor for a Springfield cross country athlete in 13 years. Additionally, both teams earned USTFCCCA Team Academic Awards under his watch.
A former student-athlete himself, Murphy competed for Springfield College from 2017–2021 in both cross country and track & field. He earned his bachelor's degree in physical education (with a coaching minor) in 2021 and completed his master's degree in physical education with a concentration in athletic leadership in 2024.
"I'm beyond excited to step into the role of Head Coach for Cross Country and Track & Field at Franklin Pierce University. From the moment I arrived on campus, I felt an immediate sense of belonging and I believe that speaks volumes about the character and commitment of the people here on campus," said Murphy. "My vision is to continue building a program rooted in respect, consistency — both in life and training and meaningful relationships. At the same time, we're committed to building a winning culture that reflects our values and competitive spirit. With a strong foundation of student-athletes and a dedicated staff, we're aiming high and ready to grow together. The future is bright. Go Ravens!"
Murphy assumes his role on Monday, June 9th and will begin preparations for the 2025 cross country season.
