HOW IT HAPPENED:
-
Franklin Pierce broke the game wide open in the top of the second inning with a six-run explosion. After Anthony Marcano was hit by a pitch and Kiobel Lugo drew a walk, Curt Boyd put the Ravens on the board with an RBI single through the right side to score Marcano. A wild pitch during Nolan DeAndrade's at-bat allowed Lugo to race home, and DeAndrade would eventually walk to keep the inning going. Joey Acker followed with another RBI single to right, and a fielding error by the Jefferson catcher allowed him to take second while DeAndrade advanced to third and Boyd scored. With two on, Ivan Arias delivered the big blow—blasting a three-run homer to left-center to give Franklin Pierce a commanding 6–0 lead.
-
In the fourth, the Ravens tacked on another run as Acker delivered again, singling through the right side to bring in DeAndrade, who had singled earlier in the inning. Jefferson got on the board in the bottom half thanks to a solo home run to center by Matuszews, but it did little to slow the Ravens' momentum.
-
In the sixth, DeAndrade doubled to left and came home on Shane Hewlette's two-run shot to right-center field, pushing the lead to 9–1. Jefferson answered with an RBI single from Mora in the bottom of the frame, scoring Matuszews, but Franklin Pierce's bullpen slammed the door the rest of the way. Hewlette added the final exclamation point in the top of the ninth, belting his second home run of the game—this one a solo shot to straightaway center—to cap a 10–2 victory.
BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS
- Shane Hewlette put on a power display of his own, blasting two home runs—including a two-run shot in the sixth and a solo homer in the ninth—to finish with three RBIs. DeAndrade had a huge day as well, reaching base four times, scoring three runs, and adding an RBI double.
- On the mound, Esteban Rivera III earned the win (4-1), going 5.1 innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out four. Drew DeLucia was lights out in relief, retiring 11 of the 12 batters he faced over 3.2 innings with three strikeouts.
- Franklin Pierce tallied nine hits on the day, while holding Jefferson to just six.
