HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Ravens opened the scoring just 1:17 into the 1st period. Junior defenseman Doug McGuire (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) dished a pass to sophomore forward John Sterling (Centreville, Va.) in the Ravens zone. Then, Sterling skated up ice and weaved into the offensive zone, centering it to sophomore forward Cooper Anderson (Marquette, Mich.) who potted it home to take the early 1-0 Ravens lead.
  • The Penmen struck back later in the frame as Austin Hirshberger tied the score 1-1.
  • The Ravens regained the lead just 1:45 after the Penmen goal. Freshman forward Sam Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) blocked a shot in the defensive zone and jumped on the loose puck in the neutral zone, cruising to the left circle and rifling a shot in the top left corner to take the 2-1 lead.
  • The Penmen tied the score again to begin the 2nd period courtesy of Brendan Lynch on the power play.
  • The Ravens then struck for 2 goals to take the 4-2 lead. It started with sophomore forward Nick Fish (Ashland, Mass.) winning a face-off, then freshman forward Phillip Parker (Medfield, Mass.) poked it to the point for freshman defenseman Joshua Tisdell (Chicopee, Mass.), who then rocketed a shot into the back of the cage to take the 3-2 lead. The goal was Tisdell's first of his collegiate career. Then, just 4:15 later, the Ravens tacked on. Phillip Parker carried the puck on a 2-on-1 and ripped a shot on net. Brendan Spinale then whacked home the rebound in front to make it 4-2 Ravens.
  • The Penmen responded quickly just 26 seconds later as Kurt Watson pulled the Ravens within 1, making it 4-3 Ravens entering the 3rd period.
  • Ryan Pomposelli of the Penmen tied the score to open the 3rd period just 2:47 into the frame.
  • In this back-and-forth affair, the Ravens regained the lead 16:24 into the 3rd. Freshman forward Mario Paganini (Harrison, N.Y.) applied an aggressive forecheck and picked up a loose puck, then went straight to the goal and fired it on net. Freshman forward Thomas Perivolotis (Littleton, Mass.) then slotted home the rebound in the slot to take the 5-4 lead.
  • It took just 40 seconds for the Penmen to tie the score at 5-5 as Ryan Kayser capitalized off a fluky bounce in front.
  • The game needed overtime as both teams each had 4 shots and a power play each but couldn't capitalize.
  • A shootout followed up overtime in this instant classic. After both teams went 0-4 to start the shootout, Dillon Phillips netted the winner to secure the shootout win.

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS:

  • The Penmen outshot the Ravens 45-40.
  • The Ravens went 0-5 on the power play. The Penmen went 1-3.
  • Sophomore netminder Riley Mastowski (Jamestown, Pa.) earned the tie in net for the Ravens, making a career-high 40 saves between the pipes.
