Franklin Pierce Falls Short in Tight Battle Against Southern Connecticut, 75-72

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (2/22/25) - The Franklin Pierce Women's basketball team came up just short against Southern Connecticut State, falling 75-72 in a hard-fought matchup at The Jame Moore Field House Despite a strong shooting performance, turnovers and rebounding struggles proved costly for the Ravens.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Owls started the scoring for both teams on a 9-0 start. Janessa Gonzalez (Meriden, Conn.) would put the Ravens on the board first on a good jumper. Franklin Pierce continued to counter, outscoring the Owls 10-6 over the last four minutes of the quarter to pull within five, 15-10.
  • In the second half, Southern pushed it's lead to its largest of the game, 40-28, before Franklin Pierce doubled-up the Owls, 21-10, over the next seven minutes to pull within three points, 50-47, with 2:07 to play.
  • The Ravens made a dent in the Owls lead after outscoring Southern, 25-18, to head into the fourth with the Owls leading, 56-51.
  • In the fourth, Southern led by nine points with 8:06 to play but Franklin Pierce used a 7-1 run to pull within a basket, 62-60, with 4:26 to play.
  • Franklin Pierce held the edge for the next three minutes as they outscored the Owls' 10-3 to take a 70-69 lead with 44 seconds to play.
  • Rheyna Steinauer made a layup to give the Owls the lead before Hope Fox canned a pair of free throws to give Southern a 73-70 lead with 16 seconds to play. Haines then converted on a pair from the charity stripe and the Owls held on for the 75-72 win.

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS:

  • Colette Mulderig earned a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Franklin Pierce shot 58.1% from the field and 58.3% from beyond the arc.
  • The Ravens had 27 rebounds while the Owls had 32.

UP NEXT FOR THE RAVENS: The Franklin Pierce women's basketball team will play their final regular season game Tuesday (2/25) at AIC. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
