Winchendon, Mass. (11/15/24) - The Franklin Pierce Women's Ice Hockey team could not find the back of the net against the Long Island University Sharks, falling 1-0 in a tight, well-played contest by both teams. 

Score: Franklin Pierce 0, Long Island 1. 

Records: Franklin Pierce 6-5-0 (6-3-0 NEWHA), Long Island 6-5-1 (6-2-1 NEWHA) 

Location: Jason Ritchie Ice Arena, Winchendon, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

• The first period saw no scoring from either team. It was a clean period by both the Ravens and the Sharks as there were no penalties called. The Sharks controlled the neutral zone for most of the period, forcing the Ravens' defense on their heels. Junior goalkeeper Jill Hertl (Highland Park, IL) however, made timely saves and the Ravens defense blocked some shots, keeping it 0-0. Then the Ravens put the pressure on the Sharks but could not light the lamp. 

• The Raven's defense would eventually cave in the second period as Sharks captain Sarah Rourke scored her first goal of the season off a failed breakout attempt by an exhausted Ravens' line. The Ravens had a few chances to even up the score on the power play but were unable to capitalize.  

• The third period also started with a power play for the Ravens. However, they remained off the scoresheet as Sharks goaltender Abbie Thompson had an answer for everything the Ravens threw at her. The Ravens tried one last push with the goalie pulled, but the Sharks were able to hold onto the 1-0 victory.  

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS 

• The Ravens outshot the Sharks 28-23 yet were unable to find the back of the net. 

• Abbie Thompson secured the shutout victory, stopping all 28 of the Ravens' shots. Jill Hertl also had a good night stopping 22 of 23. It was a classic goaltender showdown, and the Ravens were on the losing side. 

• The biggest missed opportunity for the Ravens was on the power play. They went 0-4 with the extra skater and were unable to capitalize on great scoring chances.
