Men's Basketball Falls to Caldwell at Sullivan Memorial Tournament

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (11/15/24) - The Franklin Pierce men's basketball team opened at the 12th Annual Sullivan Memorial Tournament. The Ravens faced the Cougars of Caldwell University.  

Score: FPU: 74, Caldwell 94 

Records: FPU (0-3, 0-0 NE10), Caldwell (3-0, 0-0 CACC)  

Location: Orangeburg, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • The first half began with Donte Pope (Middletown, Conn.) hitting a jump shot less than a minute in. Demariontay Hall (Atlanta, Ga.) would also add a jumper to give the Ravens the early 4-0 lead. The Cougars would slowly add points on their own end and eventually take the lead less than three minutes in. Pope would hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 9-9. The middle of the first half would continue to go back and forth until the Cougars started to break away at 19-17. However, a layup from Caleb Gatewood (Tampa, Fla.) would tie the game 24-24. The half would end on free throws from Devin Johnson (North Potomac. Md.) who would bring the score to 42-37, in favor of the Cougars, going into halftime.  

  • Saeer Miller (Philadelphia, Pa.) would get the second half started right away. On a three-point jump shot, Miller would shorten the Cougars lead right away. Hall would make a layup to tie the game 44-44 but the Cougars would capture the lead from there and not look back. The Ravens would attempt to make a comeback, but the Cougars would hold strong and claim the win, 94-74.  

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS:  

  • Donte Pope would lead the Ravens with 23 points. 

  • The Ravens shot 53.5% from the field (31 of 58) while the Cougars shot 57.6% (38-66).  

  • The Ravens had 26 turnovers to the Cougars' 15.  

UP NEXT FOR THE RAVENS: The Ravens will continue their busy weekend of games at home and on the road. Tomorrow, they return to Rindge, NH for their first NE10 Conference opponent. They will host the Chargers of New Haven at 3:30 PM in the Fieldhouse.
