Mandi Adee turns in strong outing in game one despite suffering
loss
MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 6, 2014) – The Franklin
Pierce University softball team was held to a combined three hits
in a pair of games on Sunday, as the Ravens were swept by New Haven
in a doubleheader by scores of 1-0 and 8-0 at SNHU Field in
Manchester, N.H.
The Chargers improved to 20-6
overall and 12-4 in the Northeast-10, while Franklin Pierce fell to
4-10 and 3-5 in league play.
Sunday's game one was tightly
contested throughout despite the Ravens recording just two hits.
Sophomore pitcher Mandi Adee (Kinderhook, N.Y.)
kept Franklin Pierce in the game with a strong performance in the
circle, as she went the distance despite suffering the loss to fall
to 2-5. She struck out four and scattered nine hits over 7.0
innings of work, and was only touched up for one run in the second
when Jess Spivey roped an RBI double to left field, scoring Gilly
Childs on the play.
Courtney Caputo (Stony
Brook, N.Y.) and Ashley Noke (Cumberland,
R.I.) each stroked a single for Franklin Pierce, but could
not push across the one run needed to force extra innings. Nicole
King picked up the win in the circle for the Chargers by yielding
just the two hits over 7.0 innings of work.
New Haven continued its outstanding
pitching in game two, as Victoria Cabral took a perfect game into
the fifth inning, but with one out in the frame, she lost her bid
at the historic performance as Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent,
N.Y.) ripped a double to the wall down the left-field
line. Despite the hit, Cabral picked up the win by striking out
eight.
The Chargers scored four runs each
in both the third and fourth innings to set the eight-run rule into
effect, as the contest lasted just five innings. Lindsey Couturier
got the barrage started in the third with a two-run home run, while
Brooke Fisher and Julie Devlin each added a solo shot in the frame.
Couturier highlighted the fourth with a two-run double.
Tricia Hansen (Mansfield, Mass.) took the loss in
the pitching circle for Franklin Pierce.
Franklin Pierce returns to action
Tuesday when the Ravens play host to Saint Anselm in a doubleheader
in Rindge beginning at 3 p.m. at the Melissa Bisaccia Memorial
Softball Complex.
