Erin Wood with two hits and a pair of RBI to help lead
offensive attack
RINDGE, N.H. (April 14, 2014) – Sophomore
Mandi Adee (Kinderhook, N.Y.) scattered a run and
five hits over five innings of work, and delivered the walk-off RBI
base hit to lead the Franklin Pierce University softball team to a
satisfying 9-1 triumph over Southern New Hampshire in just five
innings on Monday afternoon at the Melissa Bisaccia Memorial
Softball Complex in Rindge.
The Ravens snapped their nine-game
losing skid in fine fashion with outstanding pitching, hitting, and
defense in improving to 5-17 overall, 4-11 in the Northeast-10, and
2-9 in the Northeast Division. SNHU dropped its third straight in
falling to 19-10, 8-6 in league play, and 7-3 in the division.
Adee got in a little bit of trouble
early by yielding a run in the second inning, but was remarkable
after that. She needed just 10 pitches to keep SNHU scoreless in
the fourth and fifth innings, including a four-pitch fourth. Ali
Maloof got to Adee with a single in the fifth with two outs, but
was gunned down trying to steal second off a sharp throw from
catcher Sydney Despres (Sterling, Mass.) to
shortstop Courtney Caputo (Stony Brook, N.Y.).
Adee improved to 3-9 on the year with the win.
While Adee was dealing in the
circle, the Ravens roughed up SNHU starter Dolores Mattice with a
run in the third and six in the fourth to blow open the game at
7-1.
Franklin Pierce pushed its first
run across in the third as Melissa Morgan (Clifton Park,
N.Y.) scored on a SNHU throwing error after Tricia
Hansen (Mansfield, Mass.) moved her to third on a double
to center field.
The Ravens then got really
offensive in the fourth, scoring five of its six runs with two outs
in the frame. Despres doubled to left driving in Jamie
Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.), who singled a batter earlier,
and after Adee drew a walk to load the bases, Hansen patiently
waited out Mattice to draw a base on balls to force in Despres for
an RBI. Caputo followed by smacking a two-run double to center,
scoring Adee and Alicia Dean (Danvers, Mass.), and
Erin Wood (Dover, N.Y.) capped the explosive frame
with another two-run double, bringing home Caputo and Hansen.
Franklin Pierce put the eight-run
rule into effect an inning later as Dean doubled home Wiley, and
Adee blooped an RBI single to left, scoring Dean.
Wood, Wiley and Dean each finished
with a pair of hits, while the latter two crossed home plate twice.
Seven of the nine Ravens in the lineup had at least one hit, as
they cranked out 10 for the game.
Franklin Pierce will take tomorrow
off, but will return to action Wednesday with a home doubleheader
versus Saint Michael's beginning at 3 p.m.
