MANCHESTER, N.H. (March 26,
2014) – Senior Natasha McCarthy
(Rindge, N.H.) and junior Emily Parrett
(Amherst, N.H.) each won in both singles and doubles play
on Wednesday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University women's
tennis team was clipped, 5-4, in Northeast-10 Conference play at
Saint Anselm.
With the loss, Franklin Pierce
falls to 1-8 (1-8 Northeast-10), while Saint Anselm improves to 1-6
(1-6 Northeast-10).
McCarthy and Parrett took to the
court together at first doubles to pick up Franklin Pierce's first
point of the day with an 8-4 win over Saint Anselm sophomores
Kathryn Rindo and Courtney Russell. Unfortunately for the Ravens,
it would be their only doubles point of the day, which allowed
Saint Anselm to carry what would prove to be a pivotal, 2-1 lead
into singles play.
McCarthy and Parrett also provided
wins in two of the top three singles matches of the day as well. At
first singles, McCarthy played a tough first set before edging
senior Katherine Morrissey, 7-6. From there, the road got easier,
as McCarthy swept the second set en route to the 7-6, 6-0 victory.
Meanwhile, at third singles Parrett locked horns with junior Kate
Martin for what turned into a three-set battle. After a first-set
loss, Parrett bounced back for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory.
The match wound up hinging on the
second singles match between Rindo and Franklin Pierce sophomore
Kirby
Melbourne (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.), which also went
three sets. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Melbourne rallied
for a 6-3 win in the second set to level the match. The third set
remained competitive as well, but Rindo was ultimately able to pull
out the 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win.
The remaining Franklin Pierce point
on the afternoon came from junior Leslie Rodgers
(Westminster, Md.), who posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over senior
Christine Woods at fourth singles.
The Ravens return to the court on
Sunday, March 30, when they travel to American International for a
Northeast-10 Conference contest at 1:30 p.m. in Springfield,
Mass.
