Ravens run unbeaten streak to three matches
RINDGE, N.H. (September 18, 2013) – A pair of
freshmen, Nicole Chaet (Tewksbury, Mass.) and
Madison Finlay (Plymouth, Mass.) turned in
sterling offensive performances on Wednesday night to lead the
Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team to a pulsating
4-2 win over Merrimack at Sodexo Field in Rindge. The Ravens ran
their unbeaten streak to three-consecutive matches and improved to
2-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Warriors had
their two-match winning streak snapped in falling to 3-2 and 1-1 in
league play.
Chaet dropped in a pair of goals,
which were the first two of collegiate career, while Finlay
assisted on Franklin Pierce's first goal, and saving the
perfect time to score her first collegiate tally, which came in the
82nd minute and proved to be the game-winner.
Finlay's marker came off a
nice dribble drive from sophomore forward Hannah Weagle
(Ipswich, Mass.), who fed a crossing pass to the rookie
midfielder near the top of the box, as she quickly sent a strike to
the lower left corner of the net to stake the Ravens to a 3-2
advantage. Weagle garnered an assist on the play, which was her
second helper of the night, as she now has four points over the
last two matches.
The goal came just 15 minutes after
Merrimack had shocked the Ravens with a pair of goals to erase
Franklin Pierce's 2-0 lead, which it had built in the early
stages of the second half.
Sami Brady sent in a shot off a mad
scramble in front of the Franklin Pierce net to pull the Warriors
to within a goal in the 59th minute, and nine minutes
later Jordan Schnopp corralled a bobbled save from Ravens keeper
Katie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.) and blasted a
strike to the lower left corner of the net to tie things up. The
goals were the first of the season for both Merrimack players.
The offensive statistics were
nearly identical for both teams, as all six goals were scored in
the second 45 minutes. The Ravens held an 11-10 advantage in shots,
while they put seven of those on goal with Merrimack throwing five
on net.
Chaet got the barrage of goals
going with her first tally four minutes into the second half.
Finlay sent a ball towards the mouth of the goal, which caused a
giant scramble that Chaet was able to come away from by slipping in
a soft touch underneath the diving attempt of Merrimack keeper
Nicole Curtis.
Franklin Pierce went up by two
eight minutes later when Weagle notched her first assist by lofting
a pass into the box which Jannice Sundqvist (Harnosand,
Sweden) was able to track down by sprinting past a
Merrimack defender to lob a shot over the charging Curtis for her
first goal of the season.
Chaet, who began the scoring,
capped it in the 88th minute with her second goal,
coming off a nice pass from Caroline Savasta (Salem,
Mass.), who picked up her third assist of the season and
second in as many matches.
Weldon made three saves to earn the
win to run her record to 2-1-1 on the year, while Curtis stopped
three shots as well in falling to 3-2.
Franklin Pierce returns to action
Saturday night when the Ravens play host to Southern Connecticut
State at 7 p.m. in Sodexo Field in Rindge.
