RINDGE, N.H. (April 5,
2013) – Sophomore Emily Parrett
(Amherst, N.H.) dropped just two games while posting
lopsided wins in both first doubles and third singles on Friday
afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team
picked up a 7-2 win over Regis (Mass.) in non-conference play at
Franklin Pierce. Junior Natasha McCarthy
(Rindge, N.H.) held down the top flights for the Ravens,
as she won in both first doubles and first singles play.
With the win, Franklin Pierce
improves to 3-6 (1-6 Northeast-10), while Regis falls to 13-5 (9-1
New England).
The Ravens picked up a pair of
dominant wins in doubles play and then lost a tight third doubles
match to take a 2-1 lead into singles play. Parrett and McCarthy
paired up at first doubles to take apart freshman Jewel Medeiros
and junior Caroline Roche, 8-1. With an identical score at second
doubles, freshman Kirby Melbourne
(Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and sophomore Leslie Rodgers
(Westminster, Md.) dispatched sophomores Kendall Kolb and
Erika Palmer. At third doubles, senior Melissa Cohen
(Queens, N.Y.) and sophomore Christine
Boulanger (East Hampton, Conn.) were edged by freshmen
Abigail Wehr and Melinda Mara, 9-7.
Franklin Pierce put the match away
by storming through the first five singles matches. Wehr hung with
McCarthy in the first set at first singles, before the latter
posted a 7-5, 6-0 win. At second singles, it was more of the same,
as Melbourne picked up a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Medeiros. The Ravens
put the hammer down in third through fifth singles, dropping only
one game along the way. Parrett led the way, bettering Roche at
third singles, 6-1, 6-0. Rodgers and Cohen posted shutout wins over
Palmer and Mara at fourth and fifth singles, respectively, as both
had 6-0, 6-0 wins.
With the team match already
decided, sophomore Vanneyra Chum picked up the second and final
point for Regis with an 8-4 win over Boulanger in the pro set
format at sixth singles.
The Ravens return to the court on
Saturday, April 6, when they remain home to host Le Moyne in a
Northeast-10 Conference match at 10 a.m.
