Tricia Hansen scored a pair of runs on the day
WORCESTER, Mass. (April 22, 2013) -- The Franklin Pierce
University softball team dropped a pair of tough games on Monday
afternoon to Assumption in a doubleheader at Marois Field in
Worcester, Mass. The Greyhounds took game one by a 2-1 count and
then returned for a 4-3 triumph in game two. Franklin Pierce fell
to 6-26 overall and 4-19 in the Northeast-10 (3-12 Northeast
Division), while Assumption improved to 13-24-1 and 10-15 in league
play (6-11 Southwest Division).
The second game ended in
heart-breaking fashion for the Ravens as they could not hold a 3-1
lead in the seventh inning. It took just one swing of the bat from
Lauren Medeiros to complete the come-from-behind win as she
deposited a three-run homer over the fence in right field, bringing
home both Kayli Moniz and Christina Caira.
The homer came off reliever
Rachel Allen (Hull, Mass.), who took the loss
after pitching the final 1.1 innings. She came on in relief of
starter Tricia Hansen (Mansfield, Mass.), who had
a strong start by going the first 5.0 innings and allowing just one
run on six hits while not factoring into the decision.
Ashley Noke (Cumberland,
R.I.) continued her torrid hitting stretch by going a
combined 5-for-7 on the day, including driving in a run in the
first inning on a base hit to center field, scoring Melissa
Morgan (Clifton Park, N.Y.), who doubled in the previous
at-bat.
Noke delivered another RBI single
in the third inning and Hansen scored a second run in the
frame off an Assumption error.
Kolby Davenport finally snapped the
Greyhounds' dry spell with an RBI double in the fourth inning. Jenn
Lattal got the win in relief for Assumption as she pitched a
scoreless seventh inning.
Assumption set the tone for the
afternoon with a two-run fifth inning in game one to pull off the
come-from-behind 2-1 triumph. Ashley Impagliazzo drove in the first
run on an RBI groundout and Melissa Jalbert scored later in the
frame on a Franklin Pierce fielding error.
The two runs soured an otherwise
impressive outing from senior hurler Jessica Wiley (Cape
Vincent, N.Y.), who made her first start of the season and
went 6.0 innings, yielding just those two runs (only one earned) on
four hits with a strikeout and two walks.
Franklin Pierce went on top early
with a run in the first inning as Noke slammed an RBI double to
right field, scoring Hansen on the play, who reached with a double
of her own two at-bats earlier.
Noke finished the game by going
3-for-3, including stroking a pair of singles up the middle in the
fourth and sixth innings.
After allowing that early run,
Assumption pitcher Jess Underwood turned in a strong performance by
going 5.1 innings and scattering six hits, while striking out three
and issuing zero walks in picking up the win to move to 4-4. Lattal
pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn her fourth save of the
season.
Franklin Pierce returns to action
Tuesday when the Ravens travel to face Stonehill in a doubleheader
in Easton, Mass.
