Jessica Wiley tosses a strong 3.2 innings of one-hit ball in
relief versus Wayne State
DECATUR, Ala. (February 17, 2013) -- The Franklin Pierce
University softball team concluded play in the UAH Charger Chillout
on Sunday by dropping a pair of tough decisions, including a 5-0
setback to Wayne State in the first game and then falling 3-2 to
Tiffin in the second contest. Franklin Pierce fell to 2-4 on the
season as the Chillout was held at the Wilson Morgan Softball
Complex in Decatur, Ala.
Wayne State scored three times in
the first inning and plated two more in the second to put the game
out of reach early. Lyndsay Butler was the catalyst for Wayne State
as she smacked an RBI double in the first and finished the game by
going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. She wasn't done there
as Butler also took to the pitching circle and hurled a
complete-game, one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and zero walks to earn
the win to go to 1-2 on the season.
Franklin Pierce rookie shortstop
Courtney Caputo (Stony Brook, N.Y.) had the
Ravens' lone hit in the game. Classmate Tricia Hansen
(Mansfield, Mass.) started in the circle for Franklin
Pierce and was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-2 after she
yielded five runs (only three earned) on eight hits over 2.1
innings of work.
Senior pitcher Jessica
Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) came on in relief and pitched a
strong final 3.2 innings by limiting Wayne State to just one hit,
while posting a strikeout and a walk.
Like they had done the previous two
days, the Ravens shook off a game one loss and put in a solid
effort in the second game. However, Franklin Pierce could not pull
out the win this time and suffered the one-run loss to Tiffin.
Franklin Pierce returns to action
on March 9 when the Ravens travel to New York to take on Queens
College in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
