Kaycee Pereira logs team-high six shots for the Ravens
RINDGE, N.H. (October 5, 2013) – The Franklin Pierce
University women's soccer team was snake-bit offensively on
Saturday, as the Ravens dropped a tough 1-0 overtime decision to
Adelphi at Sodexo Field in Rindge. Franklin Pierce fell to 3-4-2
overall and 2-3-2 in the Northeast-10, while the Panthers improved
to 5-1-2 and 3-1-2 in league play.
Sarah Barone Stern scored the lone
goal of the match in the fifth minute of the first overtime to lift
Adelphi to victory. Stern collected a loose ball off a blocked shot
deep in the Franklin Pierce box, and slipped a shot to the lower
right corner of the net.
Melissa Duarte was credited with an
assist on the play, as she began the scoring play and mad scramble
in front of the net with a shot that was blocked, but ultimately
landed on the foot of Stern for the winner.
For a match that featured just one
goal, it was not without some tense situations, as both sides were
forced to make a pair team saves, and each hit a post or cross bar
to thwart prime scoring chances.
The Ravens were victimized by bad
offensive luck in the opening 45 minutes, as sophomore forward
Hannah Weagle (Ipswich, Mass.) rang one off the
cross bar just minutes into the match, and had a pair of shots that
were about to cross the goal line, but only to be kicked away by an
Adelphi back at the last second.
Weagle, who left the match for
several minutes in the second half following a collision with an
Adelphi defender, turned in a solid offensive showing with four
shots. Sophomore Kaycee Pereira (Ludlow, Mass.)
led all Ravens with six shots.
Adelphi's key saves in the
first half generated momentum for the Panthers, and they used it in
the second half by outshooting the Ravens 12-5. However, the
Panthers were robbed of several goals in the second half as well,
including cracking one off the crossbar and seeing Franklin Pierce
swat away a pair shots with team saves. Franklin Pierce sophomore
goalie Katie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.) also kept
the match scoreless in regulation with a brilliant diving save to
her right with 20 minutes remaining in the match.
Adelphi held an 18-12 advantage in
shots for the match, including firing off three in the extra
session, while limiting the Ravens to zero attempts during that
time.
Weldon made an impressive six saves
despite suffering the loss to fall to 3-4-2 on the year. She has
not yielded a regulation goal in three of her last four matches.
Adelphi keeper Sam Whitney made three saves to earn the shutout win
and run her record to 5-1-2 on the year.
Franklin Pierce returns to action
Tuesday afternoon when the Ravens play host to Saint
Michael's at 4 p.m. in Sodexo Field in Rindge.
