MANCHESTER, N.H. (September
3, 2012) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's soccer
team got a goal from freshman forward Hannah Weagle
(Ipswich, Mass.) five minutes into overtime on Monday
night to pick up a critical 2-1 win over in-state rival Southern
New Hampshire at Larkin Field in Manchester, N.H. The Ravens
improved to 2-0-0 and 1-0-0 in the Northeast-10, while SNHU dipped
to 1-1-0 and 0-1-0 in league play.
In addition to the OT winner,
Weagle notched an assist on her team's first tally for a
three-point evening. It marked the second time in as many matches
this season that the rookie has factored into multiple goals. In
the season opener on Saturday, she struck home a pair of goals for
a four-point affair. In just two collegiate matches, Weagle has
already produced seven points (4 g, 1 a).
Weagle staked the Ravens to victory
in the 95th minute when she took control of the ball and dribbled
to the top of the box. She lost the ball for a second after a SNHU
defender tripped her up, but sophomore midfielder Caroline
Savasta (Salem, Mass.) quickly touched the ball back to
Weagle who struck home a blast to the upper left-center of the
goal.
Savasta earned an assist on the
play, marking the second-straight match she logged a point as she
scored a goal in the win over Caldwell on Saturday. It's been a
welcome start for Savasta, who has picked up three points in the
opening two contests after missing a portion of last season and
much off the offseason with an injury and ensuing surgery.
Weagle's winning tally came after
both teams failed to convert on a couple of scoring chances in the
second half, which ultimately sent the match into extra
minutes.
Ravens goalkeeper Casey
Edward (Marshfield, Mass.) made four saves to earn the
victory and run her record to 2-0-0 on the season. Penmen keeper
Maggie Weldon stopped six shots despite suffering the loss.
Franklin Pierce opened the scoring
in just the third minute of regulation when graduate midfielder
Aya Noguchi (Tokyo, Japan) raced into the box
untouched and directed in a rebound off an initial shot by Weagle.
Noguchi's touch slid past the SNHU keeper into the lower left
corner of the net for her first tally of the season.
The Penmen, however, answered with
the equalizer a little less than six minutes later as Alyssa
Balboni headed in a corner kick attempt off a try from Kaleigh
Roberge.
Both teams traded prime scoring
chances in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, but neither
could convert.
Franklin Pierce almost took the
lead with 21:10 remaining in regulation as freshman Nichole
Donovan (Abington, Mass.) fired off a nice shot from the
top of the 18, but it glanced off the crossbar, thus denying the
Ravens the go-ahead tally.
Both teams kept play near midfield
over the remainder of regulation, thus forcing the match into
overtime.
Franklin Pierce returns to action
Saturday night when the Ravens play host to Assumption at 7 p.m. in
Sodexo Field.
