Women's Soccer Wins Second Straight with 2-1 Win at Adelphi

Hannah Weagle scores team-leading ninth goal of the season

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (September 29, 2012) – The Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team won its second-straight match on Saturday as the Ravens picked up an important 2-1 win at Adelphi in Garden City, N.Y. The Ravens improved to 5-3-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Panthers fell to 5-3-2 and 2-3-2 in league play.

The Ravens had an explosive first half offensively as they popped in a pair of goals to cruise home for the win. Freshman midfielder Fernanda Marques (Sao Paulo, Brazil) notched her first career goal in the 28th minute when junior Talita Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) dribbed into the box and sent a pass towards the rookie, who tapped in a shot to the upper corner of the goal. Pereira earned an assist on the play as the Ravens took the early 1-0 advantage.

Freshman forward Hannah Weagle (Ipswich, Mass.) continued her offensive onslaught in the 41st minute as she popped in her team-leading ninth goal of the season. This one came when she picked up a deflected shot inside the box and struck an easy marker to make it 2-0 Franklin Pierce.

Both Franklin Pierce goals came on just four shots taken by the Ravens in the opening 45 minutes.

Adelphi tried to rally in the second half and did make things interesting in the 78th minute when Olivia Czavar sent home a shot to cut Franklin Pierce's lead in half at 2-1.

The Panthers outshot the Ravens 10-8 for the match, including a 6-4 total in the second half, but Ravens senior goalkeeper Casey Edward (Marshfield, Mass.) made four saves, including another one late, to earn the win and run her record to 4-2-1 on the year. Adelphi keeper Sam Whitney suffered the loss to fall to 5-3-3.

Franklin Pierce returns to action Tuesday night when the Ravens play host to Saint Michael's at 7 p.m. on Sodexo Field.
