Terence Ciavarra adds first goal in a Franklin Pierce
uniform
ALBANY, N.Y. (September 25, 2012) -- The Franklin Pierce
University men's soccer team put on a strong offensive display and
scored three times in the second half to pick up a satisfying 3-0
win over Saint Rose on Tuesday night in Albany, N.Y. With the win,
Franklin Pierce improved to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the
Northeast-10, while the Golden Knights dipped to 0-8 and 0-5 in
league play.
The Ravens took the pace of play to
the Golden Knights in the opening 45 minutes as they held a
commanding 12-1 advantage in shots. However, the Ravens could not
solve Saint Rose goalkeeper James Taber and both teams went into
halftime scoreless.
Franklin Pierce continued its
strong offensive play in the opening minutes of the second half and
finally broke through against Taber in the 58th minute as freshman
forward Nico Mueller (Mannheim, Germany) sent over
a sweet crossing pass from the left side of the box, which graduate
midfielder Ryan Ruffing (Westborough, Mass.) one
touched into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
It marked the second-consecutive
match Mueller and Ruffing hooked up to produce a goal, as the
rookie sent a similar crossing pass to the graduate middie on
Saturday versus Stonehill, which Ruffing was able to send home for
a tally. The goal against Saint Rose was Ruffing's second of the
season, while Mueller, who was named the NE-10 rookie of the week
on Monday, garnered his third assist on the play.
The Ravens put the match out of
reach with a pair of goals in the 79th and 87th minutes, courtesy
of graduate midfielder Terence Ciavarra (Sutton,
Mass.) and junior Gareth Dudney (North Andover,
Mass.). Ciavarra's came off a nice assist from senior Marc
Santos (East Hartford, Conn.) and was his first in a Franklin
Pierce uniform. Dudney's was his third tally of the year and came
off a nice feed from freshman Ray Lunga (Bulawayo,
Zimbabwe), who picked up his first collegiate point as he
was credited with an assist on the play.
Graduate goalkeeper Jake
Wright (Los Angeles, Calif.) made three saves to earn the
shutout victory to run his record to 5-2. Taber took the loss for
Saint Rose to fall to 0-6. He made 10 saves on 13 shots faced as
the Ravens owned a 22-4 edge in shots.
Franklin Pierce returns to action
Saturday when the Ravens play host to Saint Anselm at 2 p.m. in
Sodexo Field on the Rindge campus.
