Men's Soccer Drops Close 1-0 Decision to Merrimack

Jake Wright made three saves despite suffering tough loss

RINDGE, N.H. (October 10, 2012) – The Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team had its five match winning streak snapped Wednesday night with a tough 1-0 setback to Merrimack at Sodexo Field in Rindge. The Ravens fell to 8-3 overall and 6-2 in the Northeast-10, while the Warriors, who won their sixth straight, improved to 8-2-1 and 6-2 in league play.

The Ravens also had their 19-match home unbeaten streak snapped (18-0-1) as they had not lost a contest in Sodexo Field since a similar 1-0 outcome to Dowling in the NCAA quarterfinals in 2010.

Merrimack held a slim 10-9 advantage in shots and got the only goal it needed in the 79th minute when Douglas Searl struck home his first tally of the season when Michael Rincon fed him a slick crossing pass right at the mouth of the goal, which the forward was able to chip into the upper left corner of the net.

The Warriors, who played a solid defensive game, limited the Ravens to few high quality scoring chances after Searl's marker, which enabled them to seal a win that brought them into a three-way tie with Franklin Pierce and Southern New Hampshire for second place in the Northeast-10 Conference (identical 6-2 records).

Graduate forward Ryan Ruffing (Westborough, Mass.) came off the bench in the second half to pace the Ravens with three shots, while sophomore David Lima (Everett, Mass.) added a pair of chances.

Graduate goalkeeper Jake Wright (Los Angeles, Calif.) made three saves in net, but took the loss for Franklin Pierce to fall to 8-3 on the season. Jose Silva started in net for Merrimack and stopped two shots to earn the shutout victory.

Franklin Pierce returns to action Saturday when the Ravens play host to American International at 7 p.m. in Sodexo Field.
