First Half Goals Sink Field Hockey Against Bentley, 3-1

Letarte nets third of the season

Letarte Letarte netted the lone Ravens goal on Wednesday afternoon.

RINDGE, N.H. (October 10, 2012) – Junior forward Chanelle Letarte (Lunenburg, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season in the first half on Wednesday afternoon, but it would not be enough, as the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to Bentley in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Senior forward Beth Maguire and sophomore forward Gina Lirange tallied a goal and an assist each for Bentley, with the latter scoring the game-winning goal.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-12 (1-7 Northeast-10), while Bentley improves to 7-6 (4-2 Northeast-10).

All of the game's scoring would come in the first half, with Bentley staking itself to a 3-0 lead it would never relinquish over the opening 18:03. Maguire struck first, for her eighth of the season, at the 5:33 mark. She was the first to get to a loose ball in the middle of the circle, turned and flipped a shot towards the cage through traffic. Franklin Pierce freshman goalkeeper Sarah Cote (Athol, Mass.) got a piece of the ball, but not enough to keep it out of the cage.

Lirange would push the lead to 2-0 at the 14:22 mark. Maguire again tracked down a loose ball, this time near the top of the circle on the left-wing side. She lifted a pass across the slot, to an area in front of the right post. Lirange was waiting for it to put home her fifth goal of the campaign. Another 3:41 after she scored, Lirange added an assist on the fifth score of the year for freshman midfielder Meghan Talerman. Lirange had the ball and a little space on the left-wing half of the circle. She sent the ball across the high slot to Talerman, who was stationed about seven yards in front of the right post and would one-time the ball to the back of the cage from there.

Letarte got the Ravens on the board with 9:03 to play in the first half, with the goal that would ultimately wind up capping the scoring and creating the 3-1 final. After the initial push towards the cage by the Franklin Pierce offense, the ball was lost in a scramble in front of the right post. The ball eventually came free and went directly to Letarte in front of the effectively empty goal, and she finished from there.

Cote made five saves against eight shots on her cage and took the loss (3-12) in net for Franklin Pierce. Senior goalkeeper Julia Powell stopped three of the four shots on goal at her end of the field to pick up the win (7-6) between the pipes for Bentley.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 13, when they remain home to host Saint Michael's in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Sodexo Field. The Ravens will hold Senior Day festivities to honor their two senior co-captains prior to the game.
