Letarte nets goal for Ravens
The Ravens return to action next Tuesday at home against Merrimack.

LOWELL, Mass. (September 14, 2011) – Sophomore forward Chanelle Letarte (Lunenburg, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season in the second half on Wednesday night, but the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team was defeated, 6-1, at No. 3 nationally ranked Massachusetts Lowell in non-conference play at Cushing Field. Sophomore forward Rachel McCarthy scored twice and added an assist to finish with five points in the victory for Lowell.
With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-3 (0-0 Northeast-10), while Massachusetts Lowell improves to 4-1 (0-0 Northeast-10).
McCarthy tallied to first two goals of the game for Lowell, her second and third of the season, just over 20 minutes apart in the first half. The first came via a penalty stroke 6:12 into the frame after the Franklin Pierce defense fell on top of the ball in front of the goalmouth. The second came after McCarthy took a feed at the top of the circle from senior Annie Hansbury. McCarthy wound to fire from the top of the circle, but her backswing caught Franklin Pierce senior back Beth Haight (Hamlin, N.Y.) in the side of the head. As play continued, McCarthy corralled the ball and sent a shot through traffic which found the back of the cage to give the River Hawks a 2-0 lead. Haight would return to the game at the start of the second half.
Lowell would strike twice more before the intermission to extend the lead to 4-0. Sophomore midfielder Janelle DeCamillis struck for her first of the season less than two minutes after McCarthy's second goal. Later, with 1:39 to play in the stanza, senior back Kayla Littig put home a rebound for her second goal of the season.
Sophomore forward Ali Ferraro opened the second-half scoring for the River Hawks with her third goal of the season off an assist from McCarthy, who completed her five-point outing.
Letarte got the Ravens on the board with 10:36 to play in the second half, as she put home her second of the season from five feet in front of the net after corralling a deflected service from the right side.
Sophomore forward Cori Trask capped the scoring with 6:39 to play, as she one-timed home her first goal of the season off a pass from freshman forward Kristina Krull on the right wing to create the 6-1 final.
Senior goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro, Mass.) started, stopped four of the seven shots on her goal and took the loss (1-3) in front of the cage for Franklin Pierce, before exiting the game after the third Lowell goal. Fellow senior Rachel Baxter (Cumberland, R.I.) played the final 41:12 and made seven saves against 10 shots on goal. Sophomore Melanie Hopkins stopped three of the four shots sent her way to pick up the win (4-1) between the pipes for Lowell.
The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 20, when they return home to host Merrimack in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
