Field Hockey Clipped at C.W. Post, 2-1

Levins notches first goal of season

Levins Levins netted her first goal of the year on Saturday at C.W. Post.

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (September 10, 2011) – Senior forward Tia Levins (Manchester, Maine) scored in the first half on Saturday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision on the road in non-conference play to C.W. Post at Hickox Field. Sophomore forward Carlee Dragon tallied a goal and an assist in the win for C.W. Post.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-2 (0-0 Northeast-10), while C.W. Post improves to 2-0 (0-0 Pennsylvania State).

Each team would find the back of the cage once in a back-and-forth first half. First, just over 20 minutes into the game, senior forward Danielle Dolan (West Brookfield, Mass.) sent a cross to the front of the net from 10 yards out on the right side. Levins was in the middle, went to the backhand and beat a diving C.W. Post senior goalkeeper Devon Trenkle inside the left post to give Franklin Pierce a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal of the season for Levins, while Dolan picked up her team-leading seventh point in the fourth game of the year.

However, C.W. Post would find the equalizer with just 2:38 remaining before the intermission. Dragon scored her first of the season on a deflection off a penalty-corner play, with the assist going to senior forward Kathryn Godshalk.

The game would remain deadlocked at 1-1 until 12:48 remained in regulation, when C.W. Post struck for the game-winning goal. Dragon would provide the assist this time as, off a penalty corner, she slipped a pass to the right side to senior back Helene Bruckner, who beat Franklin Pierce senior goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro, Mass.) with a low shot inside the right post for her third goal of the season.

Nyzio turned aside seven of the nine shots on her net, but took the loss (1-2) in front of the cage for Franklin Pierce. Trenkle stopped two of the three shots sent her way to pick up the win (2-0) between the pipes for C.W. Post.

After an even first half, C.W. Post took control in the second stanza, as it held the Ravens without a shot attempt to claim a 14-6 advantage for the full 70 minutes. In addition, the C.W. Post offense produced 12 penalty corners, compared to three for Franklin Pierce.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 14, when they travel to Massachusetts Lowell for a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cushing Field in Lowell, Mass. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Tuesday, Sept. 20, against Merrimack at 7 p.m.
