Adelphi takes NE-10 automatic bid;
Ravens wait on at-large
NCAA Championship Selection Show
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (May 15,
2011) – Rain has forced the cancellation of the
final round of the Northeast-10 Conference Baseball Championship,
hosted by Adelphi at Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex on the campus
SUNY Old Westbury. The title round was scheduled to feature
second-seeded Adelphi and third-seeded Franklin Pierce on Sunday
afternoon.
After the conclusion of the
Championship, freshman first baseman Zach Mathieu (Derry,
N.H.) and junior left-hander Gregg Downing
(Queens, N.Y.) were both named to the Northeast-10
All-Championship Team.
The NCAA's deadline for all
conference champions to be determined is 7 p.m. Sunday, which means
the tournament cannot be postponed. Per Northeast-10 policy, the
team that is undefeated through two days of the Championship is
declared champion. Thus, Adelphi, by virtue of its win over
Franklin Pierce on Friday and its win over Southern Connecticut
State on Saturday, takes home its first Northeast-10 title in its
second year in the league. The Panthers are also awarded
Conference's automatic bid to next week's NCAA Championship East
Regional.
Franklin Pierce (38-12) is expected
to earn an at-large bid to the six-team, double-elimination East
Regional, which is scheduled for May 19-22. Dowling and Wilmington
have already qualified for the East Regional, as champions of the
East Coast and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conferences,
respectively. The full field and regional host sites for the NCAA
Championship will be announced via a selection show on ncaa.com at
10 p.m. Sunday. A link to the live webcast of the selection show is
at the top of this story.
