RINDGE, N.H. (October 19,
2011) – The No. 2-nationally ranked Franklin Pierce
University men's soccer team battled through the rain-soaked
conditions Wednesday night for a satisfying 3-0 win over Saint
Michael's at Sodexo Field in Rindge. The Ravens improved to
13-0-1 on the season, while the Purple Knights dipped to 4-8-2 and
2-7-1 in league play.
The night proved to be special for
a pair of Ravens, as sophomore Gareth Dudney (North
Andover, Mass.) and freshman Trent Roy (Stratham,
N.H.) each scored the first goal of their collegiate
careers. Dudney fired off three shots during the match and put two
of those on goal, while Roy's blast came on his only shot
attempt of the contest.
Senior forward Victor
Goncalves (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), though, started the
scoring in the 23rd minute when he took a long diagonal
pass from freshman Tom Wampler (Attleboro, Mass.)
near the top left corner of the box, dribbled two steps to his
right and fired off a hooking shot that found the upper-right
corner of the net past the outstretched arms of St. Mike's
goalkeeper Logan Kingman. It was Goncalves' sixth goal of the
season, which is the second most on the team, while Wampler was
credited with an assist on the play for his second point of the
year.
Dudney made it 2-0 Franklin Pierce
in the 39th minute as he was able to convert a goal off
some amazing dribbling from senior midfielder Diego Tabares
(Seekonk, Mass.). Tabares took a loose ball near midfield,
sprinted past the SMC backs and into the lower left corner of the
box where he struck a shot towards the net that went off the
crossbar and towards Dudney, who headed in the rebound attempt for
his first career tally. It also marked the first point of
Dudney's young, collegiate career. Tabares was given an
assist on the play to run his point streak to seven-consecutive
matches. He leads the team with 17 points on the year.
Roy capped the scoring in the
52nd minute when he took an impressive crossing pass
from senior Paul Latif (Newcastle, England), and
ripped off a shot that beat the St. Mike's keeper to the
upper left corner of the net for a 3-0 advantage. Latif earned an
assist on the play, which was his fourth helper on the season.
Senior goalkeeper Vinny
Papageorgiou (Wilmington, Mass.) stopped three shots in
the contest to earn the win and run his record to 13-0-1 on the
season. Franklin Pierce outshot the Purple Knight, 15-7, while
Kingman made eight saves despite suffering the loss to fall to
4-8-2 on the campaign.
