Field Hockey Falls to No. 1 Bloomsburg, 7-1, to Open Season

Brittany Nyzio makes 11 saves for Ravens

Brittany Nyzio Nyzio made 11 saves in the season-opener Sunday afternoon against No. 1 Bloomsburg.

EASTON, Mass. (September 5, 2010) – Junior forward Tia Levins (Manchester, Maine) scored the lone goal of the game for the Ravens and junior goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro, Mass.) made 11 saves on Sunday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team was defeated, 7-1, by No. 1 nationally ranked Bloomsburg at W.B. Mason Stadium on the campus of Stonehill College.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce opens its season at 0-1 (0-0 Northeast-10), while Bloomsburg improves to 2-0 (0-0 Pennsylvania State).

Bloomsburg opened the scoring just under 10 minutes into the contest amidst a flurry 10 feet in front of the cage. Senior forward Aime Sgarlat dug it out of the skirmish and slipped the ball to junior forward Amanda Riley, who knocked home her second goal of the season.

From there, the Ravens held off the Huskies attack for much of the rest of the first half as the game featured lengthy stretches of midfield battle. However, Bloomsburg would strike again with less than four minutes remaining before halftime, when senior forward Brieann Wolfe scored off a penalty corner to make it a 2-0 game.

Franklin Pierce would strike with 1:50 to play in the first half to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into the intermission. Junior forward Danielle Dolan (West Brookfield, Mass.) took the ball at the top of the circle off a feed from junior Kim Jaksina (North Kingstown, R.I.) in the midfield. Bloomsburg sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Hollenbach came way off her line to try to cut down the angle, but got only a piece of the ball, which then fell to Levins, who found the back of the cage for her first goal of the season.

Bloomsburg struck within the first minute of the second half to reclaim the two-goal lead at 3-1. Sophomore midfielder Amber Aulenbach struck a lightning bolt of a shot from the top of the circle that found its way to the back of the cage. Sophomore forward Jenna DiSabatino, sophomore forward Lauren McGinley, sophomore forward Alexis Weber and freshman forward Brittany Mathews all added goals down the stretch to create the 7-1 final.

Nyzio made 11 saves against 18 shots and took the loss (0-1) between the pipes for Franklin Pierce. Hollenbach stopped two of the three shots on her cage to pick up the win (2-0) for Bloomsburg.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 8, when they hold their home opener and host Merrimack in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
