Late Goal Downs Field Hockey at Adelphi, 2-1

Levins scores for Ravens

Kim Jaksina Kim Jaksina and the Ravens dropped a heartbreaker at Adelphi on Saturday.

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (September 25, 2010) – Junior midfielder Theresa Murphy scored with 1:44 remaining in regulation on Saturday afternoon to break a 1-1 tie and give Adelphi a 2-1 victory over the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team in non-conference play at Motamed Field. Junior forward Tia Levins (Manchester, Maine) scored the lone goal for Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-4 (1-0 Northeast-10), while Adelphi improves to 4-3 (0-0 Northeast-10). It was the second time in as many weeks the Ravens were defeated by a goal in the final two minutes of regulation.

Adelphi opened the scoring with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Junior forward Jeanette Heimerle knocked home her second goal of the season, as she finished off a centering pass from senior midfielder Lindsay Williams, to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

It would take a little more than 20 minutes in the second half, but Franklin Pierce would find the answer to tie the game with 14:22 to play in regulation. Levins got her stick to a shot from the outside and deflected it into the cage for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

However, Murphy would find the game winner less than 13 minutes later, as she propelled Adelphi to the victory. Murphy tallied her first goal of the season off a penalty corner, with Heimerle picking up the assist.

The game was tight statistically, with Franklin Pierce amassing a 10-8 edge in shots, including 7-3 in the second half. Adelphi held a 9-8 advantage in penalty corners.

Junior goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro, Mass.) made three saves against five shots on goal and took the loss (2-4) in front of the cage for Franklin Pierce. Junior Lucia Vigliotti made three saves as well, against four shots on goal, to pick up the win (4-2) for Adelphi.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 28, when they return home to host Saint Anselm in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. on Pierce Pride Night at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
