NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 14, 2010) – Junior forward Tia Levins (Manchester, Maine) scored the only goal of the game with 13:47 to play in regulation on Tuesday night to give the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team a 1-0 road win over Southern Connecticut State in non-conference action at Jess Dow Field. Junior goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro, Mass.) made one save to post her second shutout of the season for the Ravens.
With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-2 (1-0 Northeast-10), while Southern Connecticut State falls to 1-3 (0-0 Northeast-10).
Franklin Pierce controlled play throughout the first half, to the tune of a 9-1 shots advantage and a 5-2 edge in penalty corners, but could not break through until the second half.
Levins would provide the only offense the Ravens would need a little over 21 minutes into the second half with her team-leading fourth goal of the season. She got her stick to a loose ball and deflected it between the legs of Southern Connecticut State senior goalkeeper Lauren Zarrella and into the cage for the game's only goal.
Franklin Pierce dominated the run of play throughout the contest, as the Ravens finished with a 27-6 advantage in shots, including 12-1 in shots on goal, to go with a 15-5 edge in penalty corners.
Nyzio stopped the only shot on her cage, as the other five SCSU shots could not find the target, to pick up the win (2-2) for Franklin Pierce. It was her second shutout in four games to open the season, as well as the third shutout of her career. Zarrella made 11 saves against 12 shots, but took the loss (1-3) between the pipes for Southern Connecticut State.
The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 18, when they return home to host Stonehill in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
