LOWELL, Mass. (April 29, 2010) – Seven
different players drove in at least one run on Thursday afternoon
as Massachusetts Lowell posted an 8-0, five-inning victory over the
Franklin Pierce University softball team in Northeast-10 Conference
play at River View Field. The game was a makeup game after the
second game of Tuesday's doubleheader was postponed due to
inclement weather.
With the loss, Franklin Pierce
falls to 14-27 (9-19 Northeast-10), while Massachusetts Lowell
improves to 22-23 (14-12 Northeast-10) with the victory.
Massachusetts Lowell jumped to a
7-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and would cruise to the
victory from there. After a lead-off single by senior center
fielder Katelyn Hebert, who then stole second, each of the next six
River Hawk batters would drive in a run. Freshman second baseman
Krista MacKenzie hit a single to left to score Hebert from second
before freshman third baseman Brianna Mahoney and freshman
designated player Alyssa Bryan followed with back-to-back RBI
triples to right field. Next, sophomore pitcher Elyssa Boris and
sophomore catcher Lindsi Panarelli hit back-to-back run-scoring
doubles to left field and senior first baseman Heather Ross
completed the RBI chain with a run-scoring single. Ross would later
score the inning's seventh run on a squeeze bunt by sophomore
shortstop Meagan Guy.
The River Hawks would tack on an
unearned run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single through
the right side of the infield by Mahoney to create the 8-0 final.
When Franklin Pierce could not score in the top of the fifth
inning, the game ended due to the eight-run rule.
Junior right-hander Kayla Johnson
(Hudson, N.H.) started and took the loss (6-12) in the
circle for Franklin Pierce. She did not record an out and allowed
six runs on six hits. Sophomore right-hander Jessica Wiley
(Cape Vincent, N.Y.) wound up recording all 12 outs in the
game, allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked one and
struck out one.
Boris tossed a two-hit shutout to
pick up the win (9-10) for Massachusetts Lowell. In five innings of
work, she struck out four.
The Ravens return to the field on
Saturday, May 1, when they return home to wrap up the season by
hosting Assumption in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. First
pitch is scheduled for noon in Rindge, N.H. Franklin Pierce will
honor its two seniors prior to the games.
