WEST HAVEN, Conn. (April 24, 2010) – Senior
right-hander Breanne Gleason threw two shutouts, including a
no-hitter, on Saturday afternoon to lead No. 11 nationally ranked
New Haven to a doubleheader sweep of the Franklin Pierce University
softball team in Northeast-10 Conference play at UNH Softball
Field. New Haven won the first game, 8-0, in six innings via the

In the first game, New Haven scored
the only run it would need in the bottom of the second inning. With
one out, senior designated player Meghan Walter knocked a single
into left-center field, moved to second on a wild pitch and came in
to score on an RBI double to center by sophomore catcher Allison
Vaughan.
The Chargers extended the lead to
2-0 with another run in the bottom of the third. Junior left
fielder Chelsea Harold reached on a fielder's choice that was the
second out of the inning, stole second and scored on an RBI single
by freshman shortstop Christina Gelardi.
New Haven added two runs in the
fifth and tallied four more in the sixth to bring the eight-run
rule into effect and came away with the 8-0, six-inning victory. In
the fifth, Harold worked a walk and Gelardi came up with a single
before both later scored on an error. In the sixth, sophomore right
fielder Shannon Angehr had an RBI single and Cruz singled and later
scored on a passed ball. Later, Gelardi drove a two-run triple to
center field to give New Haven the 8-0 advantage and end the game.
Freshman right-hander Lindsay
Hodges (Sherburne, N.Y.) took the ball in the first
game and took the loss (2-4) for Franklin Pierce. Over 5.2 innings,
she allowed eight runs (six earned) on nine hits, walked five,
threw a wild pitch and struck out one.
Gleason tossed her first shutout of
the day to pick up the win (24-3) in the circle for New Haven. In
six innings, she allowed two hits, walked two and struck out six.
In the second game, New Haven
scored the only two runs of the contest in the bottom of the first
inning. Harold led off with an infield single and stole second
before Gelardi walked and Gleason singled to center to load the
bases. Walter then drove in Harold with a ground ball which
Franklin Pierce could not record an out on. Later in the inning,
another ground ball allowed Gelardi to come in to score on an
error.
Sophomore right-hander Jessica Wiley
