HARRISVILLE, R.I. (November
10, 2010) – Freshman forward Robbie Sorrenti scored
a goal and picked up four assists to finish with five points, while
junior forward Andrew Letellier added two goals and two assists on
Wednesday night, as Nichols skated to a 10-3 victory over the
Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team in non-conference play
at June Rockwell Levy Rink. Senior forward Sean Woodring
(Rogue River, Ore.) was among the three goal-scorers on
the night for Franklin Pierce.
With the loss, Franklin Pierce
falls to 0-4-0 (0-0-0 Northeast-10), while Nichols improves to
1-0-1 (0-0-0 ECAC Northeast).
Nichols scored three times in the
first 14 minutes to take a lead it would never relinquish.
Letellier opened the scoring just 3:44 into the contest with his
first of the season on a slap shot from the left circle off assists
from sophomore forward Brent Davis and Sorrenti.
Later, at the 11:24 mark, Letellier
sprung senior forward JoJo Bojanowski through the neutral zone on
the power play and the latter put home a backhand for his first
goal of the season. Two-and-a-half minutes later, Sorrenti dropped
a pass in the left circle for Davis, who brought the puck out in
front and put it home for his second of the season to make it
2-0.
Woodring picked up his first of the
season on the power play at the 17:37 mark to cut the lead to 3-1
heading into the first intermission. Woodring buried an opportunity
from the bottom of the right circle after sophomore forward
Roscoe
Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) fed him from behind the net.
Sophomore defenseman Brendan McCarron
(Andover, Mass.) picked up an assist on the play as
well.
After Sorrenti's first of the
season came on the power play 50 seconds into the second stanza,
the Ravens briefly cut the lead to 4-2 on the first goal of the
season for junior forward Anthony
Chighisola (Whitman, Mass.). At the 5:09 mark, he
jammed in a loose puck during a scrum at the right side of the net,
after both sophomore forward Dino Federico
(Canton, Mass.) and junior forward Pat Shortt (New
Haven, Conn.) took hacks at it as well, as they both
picked up assists on the play.
Sophomore defenseman Wil Brown
would score his first of the season shorthanded at 8:06 for
Nichols, while Davis struck again at the 15:17 mark to give the
Bison a 6-2 lead heading into the second intermission.
Nichols broke it open in the third,
as it got goals from Letellier at the 5:06 mark, junior forward
Zach Hendrickson at 10:52, freshman forward Greg Strootman at 17:22
and senior forward Matt Sayer on the power play at 18:23 to push
the lead as high as 10-2.
Junior forward Bill Sullivan
(Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored his first goal of the season,
shorthanded, on a feed from junior forward Justin Adams (Homer,
Alaska) with three seconds to play in the game to cap the
scoring.
Junior goaltender Ben Siok (Holden,
Mass.) started, made 10 saves in the first period and did
not factor in the decision between the pipes for Franklin Pierce.
Freshman Dale Adams (Gardner,
Mass.) played the final two periods, made 22 saves and
took the loss (0-1-0). Junior Jacob Rinn made 25 saves to pick up
the win (1-0-1) in front of the Nichols net.
Nichols posted a 42-28 advantage in
shots on goal in the game and went 3-for-8 on the power play.
Franklin Pierce finished 1-for-8 with the man-advantage.
The Ravens return to the ice on
Friday, Nov. 12, on the first day of the IC Federal Credit Union
Shootout, hosted by Fitchburg State. Franklin Pierce will take on
the host Falcons at 8 p.m. at the Wallace Civic Center in
Fitchburg, Mass.
