BOXSCORE
RINDGE, N.H. (October 23, 2010) – The Franklin
Pierce University women's soccer team came up just short in a
tough battle with No. 1 Saint Rose on Saturday by dropping a 1-0
decision at Sodexo Field in Rindge. The Ravens fell to 11-4-1
overall and 9-4-1 in Northeast-10 play, while the Golden Knights
improved to 17-0 and 14-0 in league action.
The loss snapped Franklin
Pierce's four-match winning streak, which saw the Ravens win
all four contests via shutout. Despite the setback, Franklin Pierce
battled hard and for portions of the match took the game to Saint
Rose, including extended stretches in the first half.
However, Saint Rose got the only
goal it needed in the 32nd minute when Christina Cuffari
collected a pass from Carmelina Puopolo at the top-left corner of
the box, turned and blasted a shot past Franklin Pierce goalkeeper
Jocelyn Leon (Lenox, Mass.) into
the upper-left corner of the goal.
It was the only blemish on
Leon's ledger during the afternoon as she turned in a strong
performance by making 10 saves on 11 shots faced.
Franklin Pierce got off 12 shots
during the contest with 10 of those going on goal. Freshman
midfielder Aya Noguchi (Tokyo, Japan) recorded
five shots with four on goal, while senior midfielder Shona
Franklin (Birmingham, England) had four shots and three on
net.
Franklin was one of five Raven
seniors honored prior to Saturday's match as it was Senior
Day at Sodexo Field. Joining Franklin in the pre-game ceremony was
Heather Riley (Chicopee, Mass.), Kelsey
Dumont (Swanton, Vt.), Snezana Stojkovic (Vitojevci,
Serbia) and Kelly Weygand (Bridgewater,
Mass.).
The Ravens return to action
Wednesday when they travel to Manchester to face Saint Anselm at 4
p.m. The match marks the final regular season contest for the
Ravens.
