WEST HAVEN, Conn. (October
1, 2010) – Freshman middle Katie Jackson
(Cherry Creek, Colo.) collected eight kills and senior
libero Chelsie Kohout (Harrison Township, Mich.)
piled up 23 digs on Friday night, but the Franklin Pierce
University volleyball team fell, 3-0, on the road against New Haven
in Northeast-10 Conference play at Charger Gymnasium. Senior
outside hitter Sara Malmlov chalked up a double-double with 17
kills and 16 digs to lead the way for New Haven.
With the loss, Franklin Pierce
falls to 6-5 (0-4 Northeast-10), while New Haven improves to 11-1
(4-0 Northeast-10). New Haven swept the match with set scores of
25-19, 25-22 and 25-21.
Jackson led the way for Franklin
Pierce with her eight kills and senior outside hitter
Christina Calderon (Tombstone, Ariz.) added five
of her own, but for the most part, the Ravens offense was stifled
by the New Haven defense. Franklin Pierce committed just 15 errors
over 114 attacks, but could also manage only 25 kills to hit .088
for the evening, as New Haven racked up 68 digs as a team. Senior
setter Pam Walker (Chino Hills, Calif.) finished
with 20 assists for Franklin Pierce.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Kohout was the only Raven to finish in double digits in digs,
though Walker and freshman outside hitter Lauren Miller
(Alexandria, Ind.) finished with eight digs each.
Calderon, Jackson and graduate student outside hitter
Kelsey Painter (Glendale, Ariz.) each tallied two
block assists.
For New Haven, Malmlov ran up her
17 kills while hitting .277 as she took 47 swings, more than twice
as many as any other Charger. Sophomore middle Tymika Duncan led
the way in efficiency, as she hit .438 while tallying nine kills.
The duo worked off the set of junior Chelsey Alpough, who racked up
a match-best 37 assists.
The New Haven back row piled up big
numbers defensively, as Malmlov was one of three players to record
over 15 digs. The effort was led by junior libero Heather Ladao,
who amassed 28 digs, while junior outside hitter Janeeka Benson
added 17 more. Benson, Duncan and freshman middle Amber Cannady
each collected two block assists.
The Ravens return to the court on
Saturday, Oct. 2, when they return home to host Southern
Connecticut State in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The match
is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Fieldhouse in Rindge, N.H.
