BUFFALO, N.Y. (January 5,
2010) – Sophomore forward Jim Durham scored two
goals, including the game-winner on Friday night as Buffalo State
posted a 7-3 victory over the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey
team in non-conference play at Buffalo State Ice Arena. Freshman
forward Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) scored a
goal and added an assist for Franklin Pierce in defeat.
With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-8-2 (1-3-1 Northeast-10),
while Buffalo State improves to 4-9-1 (2-6-0 SUNYAC) with the
victory.
Buffalo State scored three times in a span of just less than 10
minutes in the first period to take a 3-0 lead into the first
intermission. Freshman forward Trevor McKinney opened the scoring
with his second goal of the season on assists from senior
defenseman Tyler Soehner and senior forward Connor King on the
power play at the 8:41 mark. Durham and freshman forward Drew Klin
would each add their second of the season as well, at the 14:27 and
17:16 marks, respectively. Durham scored off helpers from Klin and
Soehner, while Klin scored unassisted.
Franklin Pierce jumped on the scoreboard at the 6:55 mark of the
second period, as Sweeney tallied his fifth of the season off feeds
from freshman defenseman Brendan McCarron (Andover,
Mass.) and sophomore forward Anthony Chighisola
(Whitman, Mass.). However, Buffalo State would reclaim the
three-goal lead just 52 seconds later. Durham's second of the
game came on an assist from freshman forward Justin Knee and would
later prove to be the game-winner. Three minutes after that, junior
forward Sean Woodring (Rogue River, Ore.) pulled
the Ravens back within two with his first goal of the season on the
power play at the 10:47 mark. McCarron and freshman forward
Jonathan Schanke (Wallingford, Conn.) provided the
assists on the final goal of the middle stanza.
Franklin Pierce would pull back within one goal with the initial
score of the third period. While on the power play, Sweeney fed the
puck to freshman forward Michael Carr (South Boston,
Mass.), who buried his seventh of the season just 30
seconds into the frame. However, Buffalo State would score the
final three goals of the game to skate away with the 7-3 victory.
Senior forward D'Arcy Thomas scored his fourth of the season
at the 4:51 mark, junior forward Nick Petriello netted his
team-leading eight of the year at 6:54 and junior forward Kyle
Granville put the finishing touches on the game with his second of
the season at the 14:45 mark. Petriello added two assists in the
period to finish with three points, while Granville and Thomas each
added an assist of their own to post two-point games.
Junior goaltender Matt McCarthy (Natick, Mass.)
played the first period in net for the Ravens and made six saves
against nine shots. Senior Jon Tuttle (Concord,
N.H.) took over for the second and third periods, made 25
saves against 29 shots and took the loss (2-3-0) for Franklin
Pierce. Sophomore Alan Fritch made 17 saves to pick up the win
(4-8-1) between the pipes for Buffalo State.
Saint Anselm posted a 38-20 advantage in shots on goal in the game
and went 1-for-7 on the power play. Franklin Pierce finished
2-for-8 with the man-advantage.
The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 9, when they finish
their two-game set at Buffalo State with another non-conference
contest. Faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Buffalo State Ice Arena
in Buffalo, N.Y. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Tuesday,
Jan. 12 against University of New England at 7 p.m.
