Ice Hockey Falls At Fitchburg State, 3-0

Ben Siok Ben Siok made 31 saves on Saturday night at Fitchburg State.

FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 7, 2009) – Freshman forward John Vets scored a goal and added an assist on Saturday night to lead Fitchburg State to a 3-0 victory over the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team in non-conference play at Wallace Civic Center. Sophomore goaltender Ben Siok (Holden, Mass.) made 31 saves for Franklin Pierce in defeat.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-1-0 (0-0-0 Northeast-10), while Fitchburg State opens its season with a victory.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first 11 minutes and never looked back. Senior forward Andrew Hutton opened the scoring 6:50 into the opening stanza, as he deflected home a feed from senior defenseman Christopher Brecken. Just 3:21 later, freshman forward Justin Quinn found himself in all alone against Siok off a pass from Vets while Fitchburg State was shorthanded. Quinn converted the opportunity to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead they would hold through the remainder of the period.

Vets then scored himself to give Fitchburg State an insurance marker early in the second period, as his unassisted tally 3:55 into the middle frame wrapped up the evening's scoring.

Siok made 31 saves but took the loss (1-1-0) in net for Franklin Pierce, while junior Robert Vorse stopped all 15 shots he faced to post the shutout and pick up the win (1-0-0) between the pipes for Fitchburg State.

Fitchburg State held a 34-15 edge in shots on goal in the contest and went 0-for-4 on the power play. Franklin Pierce went 0-for-5 with the man-advantage and allowed one shorthanded goal against.

The Ravens return to the ice on Monday, Nov. 9, when they travel to Wentworth Institute of Technology for a non-conference contest. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena in Boston.
